We went last night for Mother’s Day because my mother and 9 months pregnant wife wanted to go. We patiently waited for 40 minutes which we were fine with given that it was Mother’s Day. I’ve been going to Mexican Village Restaurant for about 20 years. I’ve recommended it to countless people who have gone. With that being said, it is crazy to think back at our awful experience. My mom ordered a vegetarian nacho which consisted of a pile of chips, no vegetables, a small amount of beans and some melted cheese on top. Needless to say, it was very disappointing since it didn’t have all of the toppings and was very poorly made. My wife ordered steak fajitas which needed up being brought out 15 minutes after my mom & I received our food. I had to ask several times and we kept being told it will be out in a minute. I finally requested to speak with the Manager who apologized and informed me that the fajitas take longer. At that point, I asked why the kitchen wouldn’t wait to prepare the other two meals until the fajitas were closer to being finished. He didn’t really have an answer. Again, my wife is 9 months pregnant! She waited patiently for 40 minutes and then her food comes out 15 minutes after everyone else! At this point we explained to the Manager about my mom’s nacho. They ended up bringing her a new one, but this one had an obscene amount of beans and barely any vegetables. It was pretty gross and typically their nachos are awesome. When we finished up the Manager did come over and apologized again and said he would discount our bill. When the bill arrived they took about $2.60 off the total bill. Seriously?! Now I’m reasonable in these situations. Sometimes a kitchen has an off night or the restaurant is super busy and their rhythm is off, but it’s all about how it is corrected/handled. The overall experience was awful! I even informed the Manager that I’ve been a loyal customer and their was nothing more he could do. He blamed it on the owner. There are a lot of great restaurants to get Mexican food in Detroit. Mexican Village has been my favorite for 20 years! It blows me away that they are just ok throwing away a loyal customer. I will never step foot in their again! And you can guarantee that I will share this story with others and encourage them to choice a different restaurant for...
Read moreBest Mexican restaurant in metro Detroit! This place is nostalgic for me; (went there on a 1st date in 2003, dropped the guy but kept the restaurant) been going for the last 20+ years and although the prices have changed they are consistent in food/drink quality and friendly quick service. You can see food quality in my pictures from yesterday and food from last 4+ years.
I typically go with family or friends for dinner but know they have a nice inexpensive lunch menu so went for lunch yesterday (Friday at noon) and immediately ordered the beef enchiladas - they came out hot, fresh in less than 10 mins. I was able to get there, park, be seated & served within a lunch hour.
They have ample space inside and parking which makes it a great place for large groups. My family just went last Mother’s Day (2024) because I needed a place that would accommodate a large party kind of at the last minute and we didn’t want to wait all day. You can’t make reservations during the weekend, but they were easily able to accommodate us. Wait is never too long through it does often spiral outside those doors on busy nights. You used to be able to wait upstairs, but that was pre-Covid. I’ve actually only been turned away once and that was few years ago on Cinco de Mayo (2022/3) because they closed it down whole restaurant for a private party. They’ve recently made a change where you can’t split the check for more than six people, but I understand most restaurants have implemented similar policies.
They offered complementary chips & salsa (medium and hot) and have a large menu to choose from. I always order beef enchiladas and a papaya driver with tequila. I’ve had the chicken flautas, tamales, nachos, shrimp fajitas, strawberry margarita, and several of the combos I’ve the years. I often pack up most my food to take home because I can’t eat large portions or I order what I want from a la carte menu. I recommend every except the tamales which my husband complains are often too dry or not enough filling; yet he still orders because it’s hit or miss for him. Only ever ate dessert twice and not a fan of Sopapillas (fried dough) or...
Read moreThe owner refuses to do anything to correct incorrect carry out orders. When a coworker of mine picked up my order it was found that the most important/expensive ingredient was left off of the order so I called and was told that it was our job as a paying customer to check our order to ensure it was correct. That there is even a sign posted for it, so I guess the cooks dont check? Or the person packing the carry out?
I would have to drive back up there to physically show the food was made incorrectly and then they would remake it for me.
All I asked for was either some compensation (be it a small discount on the next order or something back on this one). I was told NO discount would be applied for my time, efforts, and gas for inconvenience, keep in mind I am at work. They would just simply do what they should of done the first time and make it correctly.
The lady that answered the phone was sweet, Darlene I believe but she said her hands were tied, the owner Connie makes the rules. When I asked to speak to the owner she said that the owner doesnt take calls.
I get things are going to go astray sometimes but not everyones situation is the same, asking for a small compensation on having to return because they didnt make my meal correct isnt far fetch nor out of their hands. Heck the owner couldnt even give enough care to take a call. Been going here since the 80's but this will be my last, I am he one that recommended it to my coworkers, I will be sending them elsewhere moving forward.
This was a $20 meal, in the end, when this place is right it is GREAT, but when things arent correct they lack in customer service and put all the ownership on the customer. I guess "Customer Service" is the customer's responsibility now.
I would recommend Angelina's Mexican Restaurant 8425 Allen Road, Mexican Fiesta in Dearborn heights, Las palapas in Livonia or Armandos in...
