I was excited to try this restaurant for the first time after seeing a glowing review on TikTok. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing—not just because of the food, but more so due to the unprofessional behavior of the owner. While waiting for my order, I witnessed the owner speaking to his staff in a highly disrespectful and condescending manner, particularly to a grown man assisting him. He repeatedly chastised him like a child, all while preparing food. I also observed questionable food handling practices—he used a cloth to wipe the prep station, then proceeded to handle various prepped items with his bare hands, raising serious concerns about cross-contamination. I ordered a veggie with oxtail gravy. However, I noticed the owner mixing a broth from an unknown source into a gravy on the side, which did not resemble oxtail gravy at all. When another staff member opened my plate to verify the gravy, he clarified that I had requested oxtail gravy. This seemingly simple clarification caused the owner to become even more aggressive, shouting at the staff member to “just serve the food.” When I asked again if it was oxtail gravy, a woman kindly offered me a small sample in a sauce cup. The owner, now visibly irritated, asked in an aggressive tone whether I wanted a full container. I calmly said yes. He then continued berating his staff in front of customers, stating loudly that he couldn’t work with the man and that he talked too much. It was uncomfortable and unprofessional, and even the woman assisting told him he was embarrassing himself. As for the food: the oxtail gravy was fine, but the alternative gravy they served me tasted like store-bought vegetable gravy making the rice nasty. The cabbage was bland and lacked flavor, though the plantains had few burn ones. Unfortunately, I was unable to enjoy the meal and ended up discarding most of it. I call this a donation day. This visit left a bad impression—not only because I was served something I didn’t order, and couldn’t eat but because of the chaotic and disrespectful environment created by the owner. I will not be returning.

This is my first time at this New Caribbean Restaurant (Topey’s Kitchen)on Fenkell Ave Detroit, I ordered the Jerky Chicken with Red Beans and Rice With Cabbage! I was very excited to try this new restaurant. This restaurant is awful. The chicken taste like Grease and Very Weird Taste,No Cabbage, they replace cabbage with just Bell peppers and onions!!!!!! By the way the Bell peppers is Undercooked and hard. That’s not Cabbage! I would never eat here again or recommend any of my friends or family to eat here. Don’t lose your money and be so disappointed. I returned to the location with the food and spoke with the owner who just argued with me. The owner just continuously tell me we don’t use Grease with our chicken!!! FYI “ i’m a 26 year old African-American male living in the city of Detroit.I think I know if my chicken tastes very very weird and greasy which it do. Don’t taste Nothing like any of the Great Caribbean restaurant like the Caribbean Kitchen on W. McNichols/6 mile. I wish I could’ve checked this restaurant reviews before I ordered and wasted my money but you win some you lose some but this one is awful. Stay away!

First thing I've eaten yesterday and when I tell you the QUANTITY exceed my expectations, but the overall QUALITY was very disappointing🤦🏽‍♀️. I had the brown stew chicken meal and a veggie pattie. My friend had the curry goat meal and 2 chicken patties. Regarding my food the chicken was very dry, with VERY little to no flavor. The seasoning wasn't seasoning at all, I really couldn't believe it. The rice and peas was just plain white rice and kidney beans, absolutely no flavor. That's not how Jamaicans make their rice & peas still very disappointed about that. The vegetables and plantains was okay, not good just okay. The veggie pattie was VERY VERY GOOD, it taste like a delicious pot pie without the chicken. Wish I knew how it good it was beforehand I would've got 2 of em fs. It was my first time going there and all I recommend is to COOK THE FOOD WITH LOVE because it didn't taste like it was.

I just ordered a jerk chicken dinner from this establishment through Uber eats. It was a first time promotional and I thought I’d try Topey’s Jamaican food, especially since they advertised “Boston style jerk chicken”. I had heard mixed reviews about this place. Most people said it wasn’t good. It had a 3.7 rating but I tried it anyway. I’ve been to Jamaica and I also lived in Brooklyn near Easton Parkway where there is a plethora of Caribbean restaurants. I have never had jerk like this …BLAND There was no seasoning. It was not grilled on pimento wood, No scotch bonnet, no Flavor or heat, and no allspice. I don’t know what this was. The rice was overcooked and mushy. The cabbage was mixed with corn, which was ok, but it was salty and overcooked . The plantains however were delicious. I was really disappointed because I really wanted some good jerk chicken, rice and peas, and cabbage. I had ordered a jerk chicken dinner from another food establishment on Saturday and was disappointed as well. This food was just off for me. I’ll keep on looking in the meantime I don’t think I’ll be ordering from them...
