First off, nobody greeted us when we walked in. We had to wait at the entrance for a bit to be seated. The main server was very cheerful, but we soon realized that there was only two servers running the whole restaurant. Yes it was Monday night, President's day, but it also was only four days after Chinese New year. As the night on, there was more people and the servers were really getting stretched out thin. Kudos to the main server for keeping up the enthusiasm, but it just was really hard to get a hold of the one of the two servers to ask for things.
For the food itself, I had really high hopes, but it was just... bland. I really don't exaggerate. The food looked really good when it showed up on the table, but when we tasted it, it was almost like all the flavor had been sucked out of it or it had evaporated or something. This was consistent with all the dishes, except for one -- the Salt and Pepper fish. Which was pretty darn good; outside was crispy and seasoned so well you could smell the steam , salt, and pepper mixed together. But besides that dish which had seasoning in it's own name, all the other dishes had almost zero seasoning. Curry was like water gravy, not even a hint of pepper. The Taiwan Style Mifen tasted like rice noodles drowned in oil -- I kid you not, you could not taste the other ingredients! I had to use the dipping sauce from the squid appetizer to add flavor to the noodles. Even the West Lake Beef Soup (pretty standard dish) was tasteless. The Stir-Fry Hakka Style was alright; it was less exciting then what it sounded like. It had tofu and intestine, which are two things I don't really enjoy too much (didn't say on the menu, should have asked).
Also was disappointed that they didn't have bubble tea or shaved ice. They ran out of both. The waiter recommended the "Taro Ball" as an alternative to the bubble tea, and my brother got it. Not at all what I expected; highly recommend looking it up for the initiated. Very sweet and syrupy with ice cubes thrown in.
Really wasn't a great dining experience. The restaurant itself isn't too comfortable either, though it's pretty clean. Just feels like a takeout place more than a dine-in restaurant. Had high hopes, but don't think I'll be coming back again, because the food just didn't...
Read moreWent to try this place for the first time on 1/24/15. Walked in to place an order for take out. The gentleman at the desk took my order and told me it would be ready in about 10 minutes. I waited for over 1/2 hour and when the order came out it was wrong. Not once did anyone check up on my order while I waited or apologize for the long wait. I decided to leave since I could not wait another 1/2 hour for them to prepare the correct order. The order that came out was not even remotely close to what I ordered.
As an observation while I was waiting, the staff was not dressed professionally for a restaurant and looked very unorganized. Wait staff was dressed in jeans and sweatshirts. Very sloppy looking. Black pants and white shirts are inexpensive and would be much more appropriate for the wait staff. The walls have all kinds of pictures that were made on a copy machine and taped up. Keep the food pictures to the menu and get rid of the junk on the walls. Invest in some inexpensive artwork if you feel you have to have pictures on the walls.
Several other customers came in while I was waiting to complain that they were given the wrong take out orders. The host at the desk looked a bit confused and unorganized. It's not a good thing when your customers get home only to find out they were given the wrong order and have to trek back to have it changed.
I read some of the reviews online and thought this might be a good local option. Never again!! There are other Chinese restaurants in the area that are much more professional and well organized and serve excellent fare at a good price.
The Red Onion has lost this customer for good and I will be sure to let...
