As someone who would make the drive from Pomona to El Monte for the ORIGINAL Maria’s bakery tamales since the 90s. I would STRONGLY disagree with Jackey Lopez. As I would with any other business under new ownership, I have gone there multiple times and was met with the same result each time. The atmosphere is no longer the same and on several occasions the workers have been very rude. I was there the morning the reviewer Jay B is referencing to, and can say that the employee was being very rude. I myself was a bit confused and needed more clarification. She stated there were only 3 red pork tamales left, which led me and others to think the only other choices available were green pork, green chicken, and cheese. When the reviewer Jay B asked for clarification, the employee did in fact raise her voice, and again repeated the same thing, but this time her tone was more aggressive. It’s very disappointing as a customer that even asking a simple question the EMPLOYEE has the audacity to speak to any customer in that way. As a business owner myself, I would highly recommend training your employees with customer service etiquette. Having employees who are attentive, empathetic, understanding and who have excellent communication skills will prosper your business, instead of losing business and having...
Read more3 Years ago I would stop by for their Tamales because to me they were the BEST and with an authentic spiciness. (Like my Mothers) I finally was able to stop by since I now live in Costa Mesa, CA. To my surprise they're not as good as I remember and the Red Pork one's (which are my favorite) no longer had that spiciness and had too much, but too much Masa. I ordered 14 Red Pork, 2 Green Pork and 2 Sweet Pineapple/Raisin. The Green Pork were spicy and very good with the exception of the over abundance of Masa. My Husband and I Definitely did not like the Red Pork because they had no taste to them, they were very, very Bland and of course with the over abundance of Masa. I have not yet tried the Sweet ones. Needless to say, that they either changed their recipe or their Cooking Staff. They Dropped off to the Worst Tamales!!!! I am stuck with the remaining Dozen of Red, so I will get some Red Hot Chili and baste the Tamales before heating them up and keep some handy for when I finally decide to eat them. After spending $38.00 I am not about to throw them out! I just have to get brave enough to eat them without having to get sick to my stomach. I Definitely Do Not Recommend this...
Read moreMy family has been going here since the 90’s. Almost every weekend and even during the week sometimes. This was the only place we go to for tamales. When my family comes from Texas this is a must for them. My sister and all my nieces and nephews look forward to it. It has been a while since we went back and finally went this past weekend. I was so disappointed because I was craving tamales from Maria’s Bakery and was excited to buy some, but the tamales tasted so different. I got 6 red pork tamales, 5 green pork and one green chicken tamale. They weren’t fully cooked, the flavor was completely different from the OG Marias Bakery tamales. The flavor in the masa was plain, the chile in both the red and green sauce has no flavor. Also it’s a little pricey, I got 1 dozen and a small little plastic cup of salsa and it was $40.32. I don’t know if it’s a new family/owner running this place now, but if anyone knows where the OG Maria’s bakery people are let me know. I don’t know where else to buy tamales. Or is it the same family but now it’s the kids/new...
