Parking is easy, strip mall, plenty of parking. We came in during normal human dinner time. It wasn't busy, a couple tables had customers. This is a cozy place with a bar that seems to be a mile high, because the chairs are so low. They do have happy hours, but none of the beers or liquors are visible. We sat at the bar first, but mah didn't wanna be eye level with her food. We sat at a table instead. I said "hi how are you", she said "no English". They had menus that were in English so we had a gaming chance. The service was ok, nothing special, we got our orders in a reasonable amount of time.
I didn't feel like have a beer that wasn't visible. I ordered a water that never came. I went to the cooler instead and chose the aloe pineapple water. It was cold, weird, and gelatinous. I didn't hate it, just had that unexpected texture.
Chips & Salsa!!!!!!!!!! Chips....fried their heart out, small, and still had some residual oil left on them. They were decent, not my preferred style of chip. Salsa...ok similar to a Pace Picante, but not as good as Pace.
I ordered flautas: 5 hand rolled with chicken inside, lettuce, pico, queso fresco, and slices of avocado on top. Served with refried beans and rice. Beans....nice creamy consistency with queso fresco sprinkled on top, but they had a little funky taste in there too. They almost had it, had they not brought the funk, different story. Rice...soft, fluffy, clumpy, on the verge of being dry. Flautas...fried hard outside, delicious, moist chicken inside. With the pico and salad on top, each bite became more magical. I love the pico touch on this one. This is the first time I've had a place do that, and it's wonderful. I still believe that Parientes does them slightly better.
I ordered Tacos: Al pastor, carnitas, and chorizo. Pastor...good char, almost dry but not. Pretty good actually. The tortillas were 1 for each taco & home made. The tortillas were pretty good, but weren't above average. Carnitas...took me right to the Mohave. They were hard to get down. It was dry clumpy chunk city. I tried the salsas provided and it didn't help much. Chorizo...good char and again was ddddrrryyyyyy. Tomatillo salsa was on point with a little spice to it. I'd suggest you get anything with the verde. Red salsa was a hotter, smokey tasting sauce. I never prefer those.
Mah had the chimichanga and...
Read moreI really liked this place.
There's nothing elegant about it. Nothing cheesy, either. No brightly-colored paintings of Mexican scenes or Aztec/Toltec mythology. No slick menus. There are hand-written signs (in Spanish only) in places. The same lady who took my order cooked it and brought it to me.
This is not a place to book a wedding anniversary dinner.
But, oh, man, the food was tasty. Cooked perfectly, not too spicy. I wouldn't call it pretty, but I didn't care. I loved it.
I'm pretty sure the corn tortillas are homemade. They don't taste like any commercial tortilla I've ever tried.
They have horchata. If you've never tried this rice-milk-and-cinnamon beverage, go for it. But I didn't see it on the menu. One of the signs (I read some Spanish) said they have different "agua fresca" available, so I asked. Glad I did!
I can't...
Read moreI crave enchilads almost everyday at work, so I race to Sabor Latino. Each time I go, they prepare my food in a few minutes. Everything is hot and fresh. I don't wait long. They make the food right in front of you so you can see the care they put into making your order. I would have given 5 stars for service, but today, for the first time, the young lady added the tip into the price. This upset me because I have always given over 20%, so she cheated herself and secondly, she just gave me the receipt and didn't inform me that she put the tip in already...which was less than 10%. Aside from that, I...
