This small restaurant is filled with wine bottles and has great delicious food. We got the short rib with asparagus. The asparagus was perfectly done with a crunch, but soft and there is a light garlic taste to it to give it a delicious flavor. The best asparagus I have had compared to many restaurants. The short rib was soft and juicy and had a great flavor. We also got the crab cakes which is a decent size and it came with string beans which were also cooked perfectly and with a tasty light flavor.
We have just had the prefix menu for restaurant week and ordered the pork belly with mashed potatoes and that was delicious. The pork tenderloin was wrapped in bacon and also very delicious. The crab cake with potatoes were delicious with some garlic seasoning. The crab cakes had very little filler and was deliciously browned. Also try the mussels, it is delicious. From the lunch menu, the salmon salad with capers, grilled onion and asparagus was delicious. The salmon is from the Faroe island so it is absolutely delicious with the right amount of fat on it to make it flavorful.
Everything is fresh and flavors are perfectly savory with a balanced gourmet taste. Everything in this restaurant is made with detailed attention to the ingredients used and the chef here knows how to balance all of the flavors to yield incredibly tasty plates.
This is such a small, quaint and nice cute tucked away gem of a restaurant with truly gourmet food. The chefs here are really good what what they do.
They have wine tastings on Saturdays from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. The wine is excellent here paired with the food which is very gourmet. They have a lot of wine classes events and wine tasting events here. This place is a gem!
They have daily specials which range from halibut to braised lamb shank. The braised lamb shank is absolutely delicious served with potatoes and beans. The flavor is perfectly seasoned with the correct seasoned savory flavor. The meat is absolutely gorgeous and appearance and flavor and falls off the bone, tender and delicious.
The Icelandic cod is incredible! The flavor has a hint of citrus and olive and tomatoes with garlic. The filet of cod is generous and the flavor of the entire plate was so delicious! Definitely an entree to try if you like fish.
We will be back again for more wonderful delicious gourmet food with their fresh...
Read moreI enjoyed the Wine House on a Friday evening with my partner during Restaurant Week. Despite a challenge locating parking as there is a sign at North and University pointing in three directions, we found free parking about a block away.
There were limitations with our ordering unfortunately. The Restaurant Week Menu was the only menu available allowing us only to order from these sole offerings. At 35 dollars a person, the menu presents three courses, appetizer, entrée, and dessert. However, the patron can only choose 2 of the three courses for the 35 dollar price. Of course, the option to order one of the dessert items a la carte is available. My recommendation would be to offer an option to increase the price to include the three courses and a glass of wine (it is the Wine House after all). What is the difference of 10 or 20 dollars to provide the patron with an optimal dining experience? If not, offer the full menu and the restaurant flight as an option. However, my guess is that the Restaurant Week menu would be inferior compared to the full range of options if offered along side each other.
Hence the reason for me subtracting a star....
In closing, the appetizer wild boar sausage was tender, succulent, and paired well with the light mash potatoes. The beef burgundy was extremely flavorful, obviously slow-roasted, and paired well with the gnocchi, and the wine-based vegetable gravy with bacon. The crab cake with a side of fries and garden salad was light but filling. The wine we tried were both excellent and memorable.
I would visit again. There is covered, outdoor-patio seating and indoor seating available with...
Read moreWe're back! After moving away 6 years ago--and after years of being Wine House denizens--we were back in town and went to the Wine House to celebrate our anniversary. And, thanks to the wonderful Teresa, we did it in style!
We started with sharing a glass of the blanc de blanc. It was so good we decided to share a bottle over dinner. And for dinner we decided on the 3-course prix fixe menu. Paula had the burrata cheese salad first, followed by the halibut. Rich had the chorizo ceviche, followed by the crab risotto. We each had dessert, but had to take them to-go because we were stuffed! And the wine! Awesome.
Teresa helped us with a couple of bottles we purchased retail (great prices!) to bring to friends later in the week. This capped off a wonderful experience. We were so well served!
You know how things grow more fondly with age and distance? And sometimes you come back and it's just not as good as you remember? Not with The Wine House! It was every bit as good as we've known--as we've held in our hearts. The proprietor, Michael, and the general manager, Dinah, operate perhaps the finest restaurant in Fairfax City. We miss them, and it, so very, very much. Please be our surrogates and come enjoy the best they have to offer. And take a bottle...
