Atmosphere- 3 stars- located in the basement of a former church this restaurant is a large open space (rectangle shaped) with table and booths. It definitely has a basement feel and was kinda chilly. In the back there is a separate room with a full bar which is very nice actually- this was the nicest part of the establishment. The bar area has tables and some comfy seating areas in the form of a sofa and chairs. Two televisions were behind the bar and at the time I was there was playing a video of a nice fireplace fire which was nice on a cold winter day.
Service- 4 Stars- Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. He did a great job.
Food- 4 stars- I wasn’t sure what to expect when coming here to eat but the last thing I was expecting was Mexican food. The menu is a mix of American style appetizers, salads, sandwiches and handhelds however the entree menu consist primarily of Mexican cuisine which was fine by me. We started our meal with the daily appetizer special which was Arancini (rice balls) with peas and mozzarella. They were good but basically fried mozzarella balls. For my main course I had the Chicken Street Tacos with a side and of Mexican Rice. Tacos were very good. You get an options of either a green or red dipping sauce. I went with the red because it was spicy and I promise it was spicy. 🌶️ we also got the lunch sized Chicken Fajitas with Rice and Beans. The chicken was good but there wasn’t enough chicken but a lot of onions and peppers which were also good (really had a ground pepper flavor). All in all it was a good meal and I would come here again to try...
Read moreWalking up my mouth was watering with the smells from the kitchen. My wife and I really liked the look inside. Very clean and everyone there was working diligently. My wife enjoyed her street tacos but I was dissapointed. First we ordered chorizo flatbread as an appetizer. Once it came out I had a hard time finding a piece of sausage on it though it was covered in tomatoes. I'm not a fan of tomatoes, but add a little salt and it was still tasty. For my main course I ordered the t bone medium rare. I couldn't finish what they brought me. It may have been a quarter inch thick and only flavored with pepper. It would have been impossible to cook that piece of meat any way but well done. The steak fries were great. Decided to order street tacos to take to work the next day for lunch. Still plainly cooked and dry. None of the spices you'd expect from that style of cooking. It would seem that Onyx is trying to save money as much as they can which I understand right now but I cannot justify going back if quantity over quality is the that buisness model. I can tell everyone is working hard improve the quality and it will be a great...
Read moreReally spacious and modern-styled restaurant in an old church. Saw the kitchen on the way in and it looked spotless; the restaurant was relatively clean too. Chips and salsa were delivered to our table promptly after seating, and said salsa was very good. It tasted almost like a cross between a marinara and a salsa and it was delicious.
I got the Steak Onyx and the WV Sandwich with chicken. The steak was very flavorful and juicy, especially when paired with the chimichurri sauce. The same was true with the accompanying shrimp. I got the mashed potatoes as a side and they were way better than they had any right to be. The sandwich and the bread it came on was a hit with me as well. They have plenty more unique menu options and I'm definitely looking forward to another visit, especially with the prices. I got all my food, plus my girlfriend's food, for $56 without including tip. That's crazy in this economy.
Edit:
As I said, I wanted to come back, and so I did. They revamped their menu and added so much more to try. I got the pastor sandwich and the chorizo tacos. Just as last time, both were pretty good and very...
