My husband, FIL and I are in town on business and decided to check out Hong Meas last night. Prior to coming, we discussed our options thoroughly as it was chilly outside and we were in the mood for soup. Not being from the area, we weren't sure where to go, but Hong Meas caught our eye - being a family run Cambodian establishment gave us hope for a great meal. Coming from Toronto, the land of thousands of cultural restaurants, we didn't know how this place would stand against our go-to spots back home. We were not disappointed.
Service is great, the gentleman who was running the front of house was attentive and gave good recommendations for food. He was simultaneously seating guests, taking orders, answering the phone, settling bills and delivering drinks/ food.
We got the fresh shrimp rolls to start. I could tell they were made fresh to order. The rice paper was still nice and hydrated, the shrimp was fresh, juicy and tender. The crushed peanuts on the side were a nice addition to add some texture to the dish!
After browsing the menu, I settled on the caramelized pork soup (Somlor Khor Sach Chrouk). Our server let me know that they were out of it and I swapped to the beef pho. Before writing down my new choice, he asked me a few questions regarding my food preferences and recommended the Khor Ko in lieu of pho. I agreed to the swap and was thoroughly impressed by the dish I received. An incredibly flavourful broth with rice noodles, large chunks of soft carrot, tender stewing beef and meatballs. It absolutely exceeded my expectations - each bite was better than the last.
My husband got the beef pho. As you know, a good pho is defined by the broth. This pho was delicious. It easily rivalled our favourite pho spot back home in Toronto. Portion sizes are huge - beware if you order the large. We are thankful we opted for the small! The portion of "add-ins" (bean sprouts, limes, thai basil, chili's) was very large, giving you the option to build your pho how you please! Our server was also quick to let us know that if we ran out/ needed more to just let him know!
My FIL also got a soup. For the life of me, I can't remember what he ordered. There was chicken and slices of pork in his. He was extremely pleased with his selection. The broth was light and flavourful, you truly could taste the herbs and spices they used to create such a tasty dish. My FIL never finishes his pho, even at home from his favourite restaurant. Last night, he drank every last drop of broth from his bowl. If that's not a testament to this restaurants quality and flavour I don't know what is.
We spent our meal slurping up our soup and fending each other's spoons off from stealing the broth from our personal bowls. Phenomenal flavours and service. Portions are huge (we took note of other dishes people ordered and marvelled at how much food was on a single plate). Great bang for your buck.
When we arrived, we were one of 3 tables. By the time we left, almost every single booth/ seat had been taken. I cannot recommend this place enough! There is a 99% chance we will be back before we leave town to head home. It's just THAT good.
Thank you Hong Meas for the best meal we've had this trip! We could taste the love you put into your food. You will have forever fans in Toronto.
Read moreMy fiancé and I were starting to become regulars here and were excited to finally have a pho spot near us since our old one was towns over!
The times we went in person, the food was always delicious and tbh the staff were always nice too…
One night we didn’t feel like going out but were craving their pho so we decided to order thru door dash, we ordered a couple of items but the 2 phos were our main entrees, when we received the bag it was closed and we checked if all the items were inside, we were missing one of the main entrees which was a bummer so we called and the guy on the phone admitted that they had a new girl working and that they were busy and she forgot to put it inside the bag (mistakes happen, I completely understand)
He asks me if I want a refund or if I wanted to pick it up in person, again we weren’t feeling to go out that night so I requested a refund, I asked will it be refunded back on the card that was used and he reply’s back with yes(common sense says if you asked and gave me the option to get refunded that means I’m all set I’ll wait a couple days and get refunded for the pho I didn’t receive)
A few days go by and I don’t see a refund, so I call and ask and he says we don’t give refunds, DoorDash gives the refunds, I was bamboozled because why didn’t you tell me that the night I called about the issue and instead ask if I wanted a refund yourself?
I go to DoorDash and try and receive a refund and they deny it because I didn’t do it that same night thinking it was handled by the restaurant.
So, long story short I paid for a pho I never received and was never offered a replacement or an apology.
First bad experience with them, but when you mess up as a restaurant At least try and fix the issue so you don’t lose customers, if they don’t end up calling back and At least giving us the pho we paid for and didn’t receive we probably won’t be back sadly due to poor...
Read moreWow... Where do I start... Took my girlfriend and kids here today for dinner. By FAR the WORST customer service we have EVER experienced. Minutes after I kindly explained to the waiter that the chicken wings seemed a little undercooked, a woman approached us, introduced herself as the new owner of the restaurant then went on to slam the basket of chicken wings on the table that my family and I were siting at. Not only was that extremely rude and disrespectful but then in the most impolite tone ever said "you guys don't like my food??? No one EVER dislikes my food!!!" Mind you we were the only customers in the restaurant from the time we came in to the time we left. (Hmm, I wonder why.) Anyways, I then asked for my bill so I could get me and my family out of there as soon as possible. She walked away, came back and handed me a check about $8 more than I expected..... The lady really had the nerve to try to charge us for the raw chicken wings that we did not eat. After 15-20 minutes of having to explain to the owner why I was not going to pay for the damn wings she finally decided to remove them off the bill. Unfortunately, it didn't end their though. She then snatched my credit card out of my hand, quickly swiped the card, refused to give me a receipt then threw the card at me and told us to get the bleep out of her restaurant. My family and I were in disbelief. We could not believe that anyone would ever treat us like that. Especially at a place of business... But to avoid problems, we just walked away and left it at that.
Unreal... Never again. If you're in the mood for Asian food I highly recommend that you take your appetite elsewhere. As far away from this place...
