This place is a hidden gem in Farmville. My family and I had just come off a long bike ride along High Bridge Trail and were looking for a place to grab a meal and some refreshments. North Street Press Club not only came highly recommended to us by a friend but was also just a few blocks from where we parked to hit the trail which made for a pleasant five minute walk through downtown Farmville along Main Street.
The atmosphere is a great blend of industrial, rustic, old, and new with some fun decor that brings through a nice touch of southern charm. They also have a separate bar area kinda fenced off and elevated from the rest of the space with lots of seating and big screens. That's a great way to keep every kind of diner (or drinker) happy without ruining the feel of the place for those same folks; both for the couple or family looking to have a nice sit-down meal as well as the single looking to mingle alongside a good beer and a game.
Their food offerings take up one full side of the single sheet menu and seems just right. There's lots of options without being bloated. There's a good blend of apps and entrees and there's homemade dessert available too. For our starter, we tried the Hummus Plate which was light, refreshing, and incredibly tasty. It was perfect after coming in from the bright sun and warm air to help us cool off and break our fast.
I'm a burger guy, through and through, and usually know which one I'd like from any menu with not much more than a glance. Here, they had three I was very interested in. Many thanks to our server, Adam C, for recommending the A.W. Merrick Burger to me and for being a real customer service professional. The perfectly grilled patty, savory cheese, barbecue sauce, homemade fried onion straws, bacon, and fresh diced jalapeño all came together to make an incredibly tasty lunch. My wife got the Pad Thai with grilled chicken, which was just ridiculously good, and my daughter got an awesome BLT that came on Texas Toast. The fries were hot and crisp, the waffle fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the kimchi slaw that came with the Pad Thai was a revelation of flavor fusion.
All around, everything was perfect. We will absolutely be...
Read moreI had high hope based on previous reviews, but when I went with my family on Monday, we stood by the “wait to be seated” sign for over 10 mins before someone even acknowledged we were there. After being seated, we saw our server once after we had our food and that was only because we had to request she return with napkins and utensils. Of the three dishes we ordered, only a taco dish was good. The tuna tartare was full of fatty/stringy pieces that couldn’t be fully chewed and the vegan grilled cheese didn’t even have melted cheese on it. Just two solid slices of some kind of vegan cheese that were easily removed from the bread because they hadn’t been cooked. (For those who don’t know, vegan cheese has come a long way and should melt and stretch similar to real cheese when cooked). Besides that, the sandwich was gross with the bread like it was coated with oil, not “butter”/margarine. The final part of the order was a cocktail that took 15 mins to make and was filled completely to the top. It tasted awful at first because it needed to be stirred but it was too full to use the straw from my water glass and it didn’t come with a stirrer. That was resolved of course once I could drink enough to use the large straw, but annoying since I couldn’t find the waitress to bring a cocktail stirrer and really hated the taste un-stirred. There was no one at the bar to ask for one either. When it was time to go, we waited another 10-15 mins trying to find the waitress to bring a check. Eventually, one of us went over to where we could see people cooking and asked for help. The waitress came out a few mins later saying, sorry, she’d been in the back. It was around 3pm when we entered and there were only a few customers. I can’t understand how the service and the food was so bad with no crowd and what looked like 7 people in the food prep/cooking area. We will not be eating...

I went here with two friends for brunch this morning and was not very impressed. The server had to ask us about the details of our order multiple times despite is ordering the menu items as they come with no substitutions. I got a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit and home fries. They forgot the cheese and the server questioned whether it was supposed to be included despite me telling her it was on the menu. She went and got a menu to check for herself, brought the menu to the table to show me it was on there, then went to get the cheese. They also added onions to the home fries, which I was told was by mistake and that I could pick them out if I didn't want them. The biscuit was good, same as any other place. We asked the server for separate checks. She split a $9 appetizer between us without asking (I didn't eat the appetizer). We asked her to add it to a certain check instead of splitting it and she said ok and to ignore the $3 charge on the other two checks. She still charged our cards with the split appetizer and said she didn't think she could refund it. We asked her if a manager could refund it and she then said she would see what she could do. She ended up getting it right after about 20 minutes of waiting. We even went to the hostess desk and asked if someone there could correct it for us since our server was also taking the order of a giant table. We were told that the hostess didn't have access to the servers tables and couldn't help us so we needed to wait for the server. Overall, not pleased with our visit this morning but the...
