Absolutely warm and wonderful small town coffeehouse! My first experience of this place was on a rainy day a few years ago, I’d just made MIchigan my full time home and as such I wasn’t fully aware of the hours or days of operation. It was pouring rain and I had a few hours to kill while waiting for my car to be serviced down the street so I ran with my head down and into Root and it wasn’t until I walked in that I realized they were closed. The owner was there cleaning or working on something and I was so embarrassed and apologized and she could not have been more kind or accommodating to me. She invited me in and she made a latte for me and let me sit there and drink it while she worked. I have been stopping there ever since and the food is down to earth good eats too! The soup bowls are the size of swimming pools it appears and there is nothing better on a winter day. Great coffee and chai served in artist made mugs; I forget to mention they sell local artist wares at Fernwood which is attached. I have bought a few oil paintings there from artists whose talent goes unmatched! Good home cooked meals and they now serve...
Read moreThis place immediately charmed us when we walked in. We loved all of the artwork and the quirky charm of this place. However, my food was entirely inedible and my wife’s food was so-so. I ordered a smoothie and it came very chunky- to the point that I couldn’t drink it up the straw. I brought it up and asked for a new, better blended smoothie. It was obvious that they took the smoothie I had been drinking, dumped some water in it, reblended it and gave it right back to me. AND it was still chunky. I ordered a salmon & egg waffle and the salmon and eggs were very dry and improperly heated (some spots hot & some cold). It seemed as if the food had been cooked days prior and nuked. I tried to (politely) return my food and reorder, but was given an attitude by the staff. I told them it is not acceptable to reblend a customer’s smoothie they have already drank from, and they insisted that’s what I had wanted. They told me my other choices of brunch were not stocked. I ended up asking for a refund and my...
Read moreRoot is an amazing high-end creative cafe in downtown Fennville. Walking in for the first time I did not expect to find the trove of treasures inside. The comfortable seating area in front of an electric fireplace, oil canvases along the wall, along with pottery from Khnemu Studio somehow seems to gel perfectly with the rustic woodwork and historical architecture of the building. The coffee was absolutely superb! However, the pizza my parents ordered did not agree with any of us, and unfortunately was not to our liking. But the good news is they have plenty of other choices for us to choose from in our next visit, ranging from paninis and wraps to out of the norm options you wouldn't expect to find. They also have unique gift items and pastas I've never heard before like 'Squid Ink'. Definitely a fun and very different experience with elegant charm and...
