How do they do it? How can they retain the taste, the quality, the presence after all these years? I've been a customer of Grant's for nearly 40 years and the only thing it's lost is Russ. His smile and booming voice had greeted me and my friends so regularly, for so many years, that while I was admiring the wall of jokes I swear I could hear him still. It was if he was standing beside me reciting them again. For like the 20th time :) I can't think of a restaurant that has ever fostered such an emotional response in me. Especially one with such extreme highs and lows. It's closing was such a sad day, made worse by the fact that I was out of town and unable to make a final pilgrimage. Years later, after a long absence from Whatcom county, I was having some dental work done in Ferndale and overheard someone discussing Grants reopening. And it was only 2 blocks away! My dentist thought my squirming was from pain and discomfort while in reality it was pure anticipation. Grant's was back? Could it be as good before? I doubted it, but I knew I was going to find out. Against my better judgement (and my dentists orders) I drove there immediately upon finishing up and ordered 4 double doubles. I painfully ate 2 in my truck, drooling and laughing and chewing so very awkwardly. I caught more than one individual casting me sideways glances. I'm sure I deserved it, and I didn't care. Saved the other 2 for later and if anything enjoyed them even more. So glad to see that this institution has not only survived, it has thrived. Keep doing what you have done and I will forever be a loyal and...
Read moreWe went here to support a local business in the region. And it's a really cute, little place. You order your items outside and there is also dining mainly outside. It's sort of a quick grab 'n go. However it looked like their was indoor seating, but no one was inside and their was a gal in there vacuuming. I'm not sure if it ever gets used or not. The burgers and fries and such were all great, but the prices were a bit high for the type of atmosphere/food/theme they had goin' there.
Also there is a "gift shop"/"country store" attached to the front of this place, make no mistake it's just a gas station type store without the gas station attached. It's super cute from the outside though! Just thought I was walking into an actual country store and felt kinda awkward walking around in the tiny aisles around other people just to leave after realizing it was just a normal quick shop 'n...
Read moreI visited on a Friday evening just before closing time. Service was friendly and quick. Food prep took a bit longer than it should have given they were not busy. The menu is pretty limited compared other burger places in the area. Prices were OK but not spectacular for what was delivered. The burgers were tasty but not very well wrapped so they arrived in a bit of a mess. The "deluxe" was pretty standard fare - nothing special. The onion rings were ordinary bulk frozen from a supplier and the "large' order was very much like a standard order anywhere else, so they were a bit of a disappointment. The premises reflected the logo, "since 1964" and it looked like it hadn't been remodeled since then. It was cute and kitschy but showing lots of signs of neglect and age. As a retro flashback experience, it was worth the stop, but one can do better locally...
