Well... so went went on Derby Day. Sat outside 445PM. Was told they had. Weihenstephaner hefe only to be told later they didn't have it. But Allagash White for $5 a pint (happy hour pricing) is a steal anywhere.
The server was attentive. We ordered meatballs and asked for a few slices of bread to go with it. Pictured is what we got. The meatballs were hot, but a tad bland. More sauce and cheese would have helped.
We ordered Quattro Fomaggio as a base with straight up pizza toppings. By far, this was the better of the two pizzas, though the toppings were light for the cost.
The other pizza was the Pizza Messicano, which was disappointing. The volume of sour cream to all other toppings was 1:1. Once I scraped 90% of the sour cream off, I could actually taste the other ingredients. See attached picture.
After eating 1/2 the pizzas each, we got the Raspberry Cheesecake and split it happily. Was the second best thing we had, behing the beer.
All in all the place was clean, the service was good, the beer selection is great. The pizza was disappointing. The free entertainment, since we sat outside under the lip of the building was watching wrens build their nests.
If we go back I'll try the...
Read moreFor gluten free diners beware: we ordered two gluten free pizzas and one not gluten free 8”. Our gluten free pizzas were nearly the same size as the regular. However, the $3 gluten free crust upcharge adds to the 12” pizza price which is not written on the menu. I paid $17.95 for a small gluten free four cheese pizza adding mushrooms and olives and $15.95 for a gluten free crust with only tomato sauce, feta, and olives (no mozzarella or anything else). I had to negotiate with the waiter to receive an itemized bill after we were double charged for the crust which took two loops because only one was taken off. We’ve been going to Bova for years because the staff was friendly and they were always conscientious about our food allergies. But for that price - 3 Small pizzas and a salad for $60 before tip - I can buy a lot more gluten and dairy free pizza at Boston Pizzeria or pick them up in the grocery store. I wish Bova great success but we can’t go back with pricing that in reality is a $7 upcharge for every...
Read moreI have been to Bova twice. Overall, it is a clean restaurant with a nice staff. The first time, I went with my kids. My son ordered macaroni and cheese. I ordered pizza. I smelled garlic before the food left the kitchen. It became more powerful as the food reached our table. I assumed they used a lot of garlic in the pizza sauce. My son said that he couldn't eat his macaroni and cheese. I took a bite and it was like eating a raw clove of garlic with a hint of cheese. It made no sense at all why they would put so much garlic in macaroni and cheese for a child. The second time was just me and my wife. We enjoyed the meal but, again, everything had garlic in it. My wife joked that her sweet tea had a garlic taste as well. If you don't like garlic added to everything, I do not suggest ordering anything on the menu as I personally found it in the pizza, macaroni and cheese, ravioli, and chicken. If you love garlic, then the rest of the...
