Sunrise Family Restaurant — Restaurant in Flagg Township

Passing through Rochelle. I read the reviews before my daughter and I went to the Sunrise Family Restaurant. We were hoping for a somewhat palatable, warm, decently priced meal. When we arrived it was crowded. That's always a good sign. We were seated within minutes, had our drink order taken and served quickly served by the owners son. He was very friendly and personable. The waitress came to take our order with a smile. I looked around to see other diners that seemed pleased and content. I ordered the Sunday special. Half roasted chicken, french onion soup, and mashed potatoes for $11.99. There was also corn and stuffing. I will confess, I am a foodie...and I was impressed because the food was homemade and flavorful. On top of that, I have lunch and dinner for tomorrow. I don't know how this family makes money serving such large portions. (I have a feeling they've done this with folks their whole lives...cooking too much.) The Dad and uncle I glanced at cooking behind the counter cook for people with love and have a real passion and calling to feed people and see them happy and satisfied. When I pass near Rochelle in the future...I'll be sure to return. My daughter was telling people at our hotel about our experience! I hope the family will carry on this legacy. This was the second time my wife and I got food from here and the first time it was absolutely delicious!!! We got food again from there today and it wasn’t horrible, but it was better the first time around. So we both ordered dinner meals and those came with a soup and dessert. My wife ordered rice pudding and I ordered peppermint ice cream for my dessert. The worker came to our car with our order and she said they didn’t have any peppermint ice cream so she said that they gave another rice pudding instead of ice cream. She never asked me if I wanted rice pudding and I do not like rice pudding at all so it was an assumption. We come home and there isn’t even an extra rice pudding like she said. They asked for my phone number and they could’ve called and told me about the ice cream so that I can choose my own dessert but they didn’t. So no dessert for me. My wife then starts to eat her rice pudding and she felt something hard while eating it and she said it was a grape so she was done with that. Not sure why a grape was in there. We were seated very quickly despite the lunch rush. Our table was dirty but they were attentive to clean it right away. The ground was covered in wrappers and food. Our food was served promptly. However, my girlfriend food was ice cold. Normally we would not complain but it was a dish that required it to be warm to eat. We told the server and they were quick to fix the problem. They took the food in the serving station that was in clear view for the patrons. The server handed the dish to her coworker and gestured toward the microwave. Instead of remaking or replacing the dish they just warmed it in a microwave. Then, the coworker put her ungloved hand in the food. I have worked in the food industry before, and that is the worst possible thing to do. You should remake or replace the food. Never touch someone’s food with an exposed hand.
