If you’re looking for true Japanese cuisine in Northern Kentucky, this is it — the only AUTHENTIC Japanese restaurant in the area, and it delivers every time. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with the warm hospitality. The food IS Absolutely phenomenal. Every dish is prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients, perfectly balanced flavors, and traditional techniques you just don’t find anywhere else around here. The sushi is delicate and expertly crafted, the ramen broth is rich and soul-warming, and the tempura is light, crisp, and never greasy. Even the simplest dishes — like miso soup or a side of pickled vegetables — are executed with care. What makes it even more special is the authenticity. This isn’t “Americanized” Japanese food — it’s the real thing, and you can taste the passion and pride in every bite. Whether you’re a longtime lover of Japanese cuisine or trying it for the first time, this place will set the bar high. For groups 5 or more you get the who experience as if you stepped into a small Tokyo eatery!! A rare gem in NKY. Five stars all the way!

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now since it was labeled as one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in the Cincinnati area. Most of the customers that came in were Asian and I heard some of them speaking Japanese. I went for lunch and got the tempura combo bento box with salmon. Although the food was very good, I thought the portion size was quite small for the price paid compared to other bento boxes I have ordered at other restaurants. I spent $16 plus tax and tip for the food pictured. It also came with miso soup and a salad. I ate everything, however left the restaurant still hungry. The service was also a bit slow even though the restaurant was not busy. There was only one other diner who ordered before me and I still waited quite awhile for my meal after ordering. The only waitress working was super friendly and kind though. Overall, I enjoyed my meal but not a restaurant I will go out of my way to go to again unless I'm nearby.

I recently savored a delightful home-cooked meal at this traditional Japanese restaurant. The inviting traditional tatami rooms infused the dining experience with a comforting authenticity. Opting for the bento, I delighted in a diverse array of flavors – from the impeccably grilled Maruyaki fish to the crispy tempura and an assortment of sashimi, showcasing various delectable cuts of fish. What set this experience apart was the unmistakable touch of home in each dish. The vegetable stew, reminiscent of a family recipe, seamlessly complemented the ensemble. Notably, the Japanese sticky rice, with its authentic hometown taste, provided a warm and nostalgic embrace, elevating the entire meal to a cherished home-cooked affair. If you appreciate the homely touch in your dining experience and crave authentic Japanese flavors, this restaurant is a must-try. It's not just a meal; it's a heartwarming journey into the heart of Japanese home cooking.

I was fairly disappointed by this experience. Our server seemed new and inexperienced, but there wasn’t many people but it still took forever for us to get service and to be helped. There had to have been one cook in the back because our food took about 40-50 minutes to come out after being put in to order. But honestly all of this could have easily have been overlooked if the food wasn’t the smallest portion for the highest prices. I expected to spend quite a lot of money for a fancy sit down restaurant but the interior didn’t even look posh but more on par with any other restaurant, but with the prices of a high end restaurant.

I honestly have to say the most upsetting part of all this was definitely the small amount of food. It was 10.50 for an appetizer with fish sashimi, and it was 6 slices of fluke the size of my pinkie and so thin it was see through. We paid 6.50 for a 5in square of Mackerel that was way too salty. And we were excited about the sushi A dinner meal thinking we could share it and it was a few pieces of nigiri with a small amount of rice and 6 pieces of a roll that were about the size of my thumb nail each. The dinner came with a small bowl of miso soup and a ginger salad. The salad had just a few pieces of romaine and one tomato with some ginger dressing, not exactly high quality. That meal was 20 dollars. Then the takoyaki was cool but about 9 dollars for 6 small cherry sized pancake balls.

If we had been given even a little more food we probably would have ordered more just to enjoy but it was so frustrating how long it all took and how small it was that we just left and got...

I always love eating here. Honestly the best Japanese restaurant in town, and it's not just their sushi. I've been coming here for over 13 years, and I still haven't had everything on their menu there's such a variety of things to try. It's not just a sushi place. There's a wide variety of Japanese dishes. Also I've always loved their atmosphere of a traditional Japanese restaurant. They used to even have a curtain when you walked in. I guess they got rid of it because people didn't get it. That or it was damaged. One of the perks when we moved to this area was "Omg! We're only 7 minutes from Matsuya!" It's our favorite place to eat. It was our first time taking our 3 year old there, and I felt so bad because we don't often take him out to restaurants, and the waitress with the faded pink hair was so understanding. Especially since I just had a long hard day at work and I was trying to calm down my son, it must have taken me 20 minutes to figure out what we wanted to start. We also normally spend like a week planning what we want and order it all at once but my uncle was in from out of state suddenly and has a completely different method of ordering Japanese food than we do and we kept ordering stuff, and said pink haired waitress was so understanding. I don't know what she's being paid, but she needs a raise. My uncle and I used to work in food services and he used to run several restaurants, and I know how hard work it is, and I always try to be considerate to the wait staff, but I just felt like we may have been a little hard to deal with than we...

I’m a Taiwanese person who has visited Japan three times, and I had high expectations when I entered this restaurant, especially after seeing the tatami seating and knowing the staff were Japanese (which made the place seem more authentic, rather than a typical American-Japanese restaurant). However, there were a few aspects of the experience that left me a bit disappointed.

Firstly, I noticed that the server did not offer us hand towels, while they did offer them to other tables, even though she was very polite to us. This inconsistency caught me off guard.

As for the food, the freshness of the sashimi was okay, but the sushi rice was too sticky and lacked distinct grains. The tuna had some sinew, and the scallop and octopus lacked the fresh, sweet flavor I was expecting. Additionally, the yellowtail sashimi was cut in a way that felt incomplete, with the pieces not having the usual clean, elegant slices I expected. But the squid sashimi was sweet and delicious. The grilled items were all served cold, which was unacceptable. The Beef Tataki was quite dry and lacked seasoning, and the Kabayaki was average with no standout features. On a positive note, the seafood salad was quite good, and the dressing was flavorful.

Overall, this was probably the most disappointing Japanese dining experience I've had in the U.S. It didn’t live up to the standard I expected based on the restaurant’s ambiance and the...
