The Kava shop is right next door to a Smoke shop where me and my friend bought CBD. Upon stepping outside and leaving the Smoke shop we were met with a heavy down pour of rain. We noticed that directly in front of the Smoke shop there was a row of outside patio tables with shade on each side of the entrances. We noticed multiple ashtrays on the tables so we sat down to the closest one to have a smoke. Not even 3 minutes go by before we are met with an employee from the Kava Shop. She comes up to us and sternly complains about us smoking. I pointed out we had just left the Smoke shop and were trying to escape the rain. Not even being able to finish my statement mid-sentence I was cut off by the employee stating that smoking was not allowed at their establishment and that the seating was not apart of the smoke shop, they were for paying customers at the Kava Shop only. I then offered to compensate her for letting us sit at one of her outside table with a tip. Just some cash for her to at least allow us to sit there and escape the rain. She shook her head no and declined my offer for gratuity and she then repeated that there was no smoking. I just decided to stand up from the chair and remove myself from the table and continue smoking but she didn’t leave us alone or walk away. She repeated you can’t smoke here. I let her know that was a public sidewalk outside and I then pointed out there were ashtrays on the tables outside and to that statement she made no comment. I then offered to make a purchase from the Kava Shop to allow us to sit down but even then she refused service to us. I believe her actions were based on a prejudice against me and my friend because none of what transpired made any common sense. We were not breaking any laws or bothering anyone but I believe that our presence was what was bothering her. It had nothing to do with us smoking outside she just didn’t want to see two black women sitting in front of the establishment smoking. And after trying to be understanding and considerate we were just met with indifference and hostility. Even after offering to compensate her or make a purchase to the shop in order to sit down at one of the empty outside tables to escape the rain she refused. She would rather us remove ourselves completely than for her company to make a profit or for her to make a tip. Instead of deescalating the situation with alternative solutions she instead chose to be completely dismissive and in all honesty just plain rude. She didn’t care about us offering to reconcile the situation or accommodate her by purchasing from the establishment but she would rather just refuse service to us entirely instead. Just to see us leave from in front of the place and step out into the rain. The treatment me and my friend received was blatantly racially motivated. She made us feel like we were unwanted, unwelcome and unfit to be there. It really sucks because my friend and I are here on our vacation and she is already a huge Kava lover and it was already in our plans to visit the Kava shop before the beach. Unfortunately it obvious that our presence is not welcomed there. It was like having an experience of what Jim Crow laws must’ve felt like...
Read moreMy husband and I were excited to see a non-alcoholic bar in downtown Jensen as we don’t drink. We had never heard of Kava but wanted to give it a try. The place just opened only a few days ago so they are still getting things set up. It has a cool vibe and the bartender seemed very knowledgeable. He asked if we were looking for something to wake us up or chill out. I went with a wake me up drink (Kratom) and my husband chose a chill drink (Kava). They both tasted awful but apparently you drink it for the effect not the taste. The bartender also gave us a “super concentrated” shot of Kava with some coffee creamer and it tasted a little better. We finished our drinks and went on our way. My husband said he didn’t feel any different after drinking his but I started feeling dizzy and anxious. As the time went on I began to feel very nauseous. We decided to go home. I got home and started throwing up and felt absolutely awful! I laid down and passed out for a couple hours and still felt horrible after waking up. My stomach hurt so bad the entire night. I couldn’t eat and could barely keep water down. I don’t know if I was overdosed with this stuff or what. My husband only had the Kava and he was fine so im assuming it was the Kratom that made me so sick. Needless to say I will NEVER be drinking Kava or Kratom ever again! Definitely not the experience I...
