The food is great! My hubby and I ended up here via groupon. The night we came, we were unable to use it, but either way we loved our food. So, since we had a groupon to use we decided to come today, Sunday with our kids. As the first time, we loved our food. Big portions, reason as to way we got less food this time. My kids are picky eaters, so decided to order just plate of food for them. There was only one thing that really ruined our lunch....the server. She was the tall blonde lady. She treated us the WHOLEEE time as we were some cheap customers. She had NO idea why we "only"( as she referred to the gyros) we ordered them. I asked her about the kids menu, she said what they had...we ordered ck, but she keep on insisting for another plate for my other kid, she also said the price as if I was asking her for it. We then asked if we were getting pita and oily dip, she said "no, with just sandwiches you don't get them, but you can get them for 7+!" That really bothered us. We were not asking for price, we just wanted to know if we did or not, bc we love that oily stuff on our fries. Then she said..."well you can also get a pita for a Dollar!!!" ...then after our food came out...a while after she came and dropped off an order of pitas ( that we didn't eat, only my kid picked 2 up and ate them, since she didn't know we were not going to eat them at all). I am a polite person, I didn't want to make a scene, but that lady has a horrible attitude. We felt insulted that whole time. Then, to top it with a cherry, we had our groupon, when I told her, she said very loud, "well, now intead of 40 you pay 20"! Gave her the card came back..and she said "remember it was originally 40!!!" I am Hispanic, I was a server many years, I know Hispanics have a bad reputation for not tipping well, it is what it is, but it isn't fair or respectful that servers generalize, I am Hispanic and never tip less than 20% and We are not cheap with our food. This lady DID NOT deserve our money at all, the only reason we tipped, was bc there was another young lady that was very nice and didn't have any fault as we think the split tips. Overall, we love the food, horrible server, we will go back one day, however, if I see her as the server, not the owner's daughter (amazing server!)or someone else...we...
Read moreFirst off, the food at Nomiki's Plakka is spot on. My wife and I have been going on and off for years and have always enjoyed the experience. I'm sure there's someone who will argue there are better Greek restaurants, for us Nomiki's offers a great combination of price, portion, atmosphere, and service.
For the food, from the lamb, to classic Greek dishes like pastisio or mousaka, even the simple Gyro, we have yet to try anything we didn't enjoy. Everything is filled with rich Greek and Mediterranean flavors, made fresh to order. Yeah, sure, they have the American favorite French fries on the menu, it's an imperfect world (I'll confess, I like my Gyro with a side of fries, everybody has their flaws).
Is the atmosphere a little "cheesy" - yeah, but not in a bad way. It tries to look like you're sitting on the Mediterranean coast, and just feels like someone tried to hard. I'd argue that it's endearing for the effort. Don't get me wrong, it looks a little dated, but in a way that isn't a bad thing. Every restaurant doesn't have to be done in some ultra modern, boho-chic, reinterpreted.. blah blah blah. Sometimes, some noticeably dated furnishings and decor provide their own charm.
Suggestions for going to Nomiki's Plakka - go hungry (and be prepared to have leftovers - the Greeks know how to eat), remember that flaming cheese (saganaki) is a good thing (say OPA! with gusto), if you're unfamiliar with Greek food don't be afraid to ask (the servers are happy to explain, correct pronunciation, and suggest something new), finally remember to enjoy...
Read moreI have been going to this restaurant for the past four years. Sometimes twice a week but I haven't been here in the last six months, as I've been out of state on business. I returned this evening with a family member and was eager to experience some great Greek food. I have to say I was extremely disappointed. The service was mediocre at best. I had to ask the waitress to bring us some bread and when she did, she didn't provide us with separate bread plates. The salads were fresh and tasty but because of the e-coli epidemic they did not provide any lettuce, ok, not a problem. What we really came for were the entrees. I ordered my favorite dish, the moussaka and my guest ordered the spanakopita. We were both sadly disappointed. My moussaka was much smaller than I remembered and was more of a luncheon or appetizer size. The accompanying green beans were overcooked and soggy. The spanakopita was dry and flavorless. I'm not sure it was even made with filo dough. It looked more like a small calzone. I've heard that the restaurant is under new management. I didn't recognize any of the wait or kitchen staff, who were always very attentive. I would like to go back there but if I have the same experience again, it will...
