We've lived near House of Cheng for about a decade now and last night was the first time we tasted any dishes from there. A friend came by for a movie and dinner. We usually cook but it seemed more convenient to order out and we all enjoy Asian food of various types. So why not try Cheng?
The meal was a smashing success! It was certainly the most finely prepared Chinese cuisine we've run into in the Tucson area.
I brought home three items: Shrimp and Snow Peas, Beef and Broccoli, and Tofu with Mixed Vegetables. Picking a favorite would be impossible.
Each dish made its own special impression. The shrimp dish had succulent shrimp and the snow peas were fresher and bigger and juicier than any I've see either at a market or in a restaurant dish. The bamboo shoots in that dish were NOT from a can, by the way. The tofu veggies and the accompanying sauce made a real hit. The beef was tender and lightly seasoned. I caught a bit of anise. My wife noted a hint of cinnamon. We figure some five spice powder was used. It was gently used, perfectly used. The broccoli was fresh and tasty and the sauce in no way duplicated what was on the tofu dish.

And chicked.. Called up after I got home and was polite.. they did not want to hear what I had to say and lied up and down.. well maybe the rice might of been cooked this morning but ALL THE MEAT WAS CLEARLY REHEATED SEVERAL TIMES OVER and OLD... looked like beef jerky....have eaten here many times and never had food this bad there..and the only reason I do go back Is because it is convenient and usually only order white rice and steamed broccoli... if u mess that up.. well u just suk and should not be in a kithcen... Proper customer service would of been to just try to do what is right and make it right some way.... but nope these guys are clown shoes and clearly do not have a clue..... customers pay your Bill's and provide everything you have and will have... you just lost this one forever... with all the new growth around... there will be plenty of other places to eat at real soon.. Better find another line of work guys.. I predict out of business with in 2...
Read moreWe dropped in here as a party of four for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. No one greeted us at the door. No signage at the front about self seating. We asked other diners if we seat ourself, they nodded yes. The staff we eventually interacted with were cordial and speedy. I’m not sure if they were annoyed or preoccupied, or if I was just reading too much into the whole setting. The place could really benefit from a deep cleaning, new paint on the walls, and getting rid of some gigantic, old, and clearly unused buffet tables.
I had the lunch combo of orange chicken. It’s a dish that is pretty difficult to mess up. It tasted okay. Nothing bad about it. The combo comes with other goodies like soup, crispy spring roll (or egg roll? can’t recall), crab wonton, and rice. Nothing was bad. Most items tasted like they were under seasoned or missing depth of flavor.
We’re new to the area and looking to support our local businesses. We have been to the other shops and restaurants around House of Cheng, and they’re all great. The House is just okay, and could be good...
