The very best kind of rock shop. It could use a good dusting, and the labels on the rough outside have weathered into illegibility, but the guy there genuinely loves rocks and fossils. There was a rock-happy kid in the shop when I arrived who had to look at ALL the specimens, and the owner was wonderfully patient and encouraging with him.
In my case, he very kindly wrote out the full provenance of all the unlabeled fossils I'd bought, and came up on the spot with an opinion on how ammonites taste ("like squid"). He knows his stuff.
The shop has plenty of fun, inexpensive specimens for people who are new to rocks and fossils, and they're all the real thing, undyed and undoctored. The higher-end mineral specimens are remarkable. (A couple of them are going to haunt me.)
The best fossils and antiquities are in the back room. Not all of the artifacts have full provenance (not unusual), but where it's known it's given in detail. What kind of stuff they have there: a couple of nice Mesoamerican figural pots, some everyday Roman and later bits (fibulae, iron nails from Inchtuthil), interesting scraps of Inca textiles, various Egyptian tools, a lot of old glass beverage bottles, and plenty of other bits and bobs.
I loved it. I'd go back there in a flash. Highly...
Read moreI love this place I don't want to ever leave when I get the chance to go here. I can't believe I never went there as a kid only living less then 3mins away!! This place is old Western style has been in the same location for 57yrs. So you pull into a dirt parking lot and the first thing that u see is a bunch of rocks in chicken wire bins as well as a pile of rocks that is bordered with wooden beams, just a bunch of different kind of rocks that you pick yourself and I believe the price I guess depends on the size could be anywhere from $1.00 to $5.00 this is one of my favorites cause there is so many different rocks to choose from. Then you step up to the wooden porch and there are more bins of rocks u can purchase, then you walk into the shop thru their screen door and the first thing I seen was these glass displays that have all kinds of skulls from life size human skulls to ones you can fit in your hand it is so cool. Then you just continue to look at all the magnificent speciems that this shop has. I have been to many rock shops here in Tucson and this is the best one yet! The owner is friendly and his prices are very reasonable!! This shop is the place to go if you're a rock hound like myself. Hope you enjoy your visit as...
Read moreI wish I could give this even more stars. This shop is my favorite place to visit when I come down to Tucson and is ALWAYS the highlight of my trip. Ron and John are two of the nicest, most generous people I have ever met and their prices are always fair, if not on the low side. Yes, there is dust, but they live out in the desert so I don't know what else you could expect coming here. It's not hard to dust off any goodies you get here anyways :) I always spend at least two hours, if not three, here. The store looks small from the outside but is completely packed on the inside with anything you could ever want--minerals, polished, raw, tumbled, and fossils of all kinds. I cannot emphasize enough how great the owners make the experience of this store. I could sit and chat with Ron and John about minerals and fossils all day! They know practically everything about the topic and any question you have, I'm sure they can answer. I could go on and on about this place, but I'll just stop by saying that if you are into minerals and fossils, no matter the drive, the Tucson Mineral and Gem...
