El Sombrero — Restaurant in Fox River Grove

First off, the tortilla chips for the salsa are complete garbage. They're hard and they are the worst tortilla chips I've had it any Mexican restaurant, I travel this nation and have been too many Mexican restaurants but this is far by the worst I've ever been to. I ordered an enchilada, the refried beans in the rice are the best part about it. They have absolutely no soda selection Between Coke, Diet Coke, and Fanta and unsweet tea. The menu is complete trash, there's not a single picture on it most of its in Spanish and last time I checked this was America. Horrible menu, the the service was mediocre as I was not checked on once after the food was put on my table. The best part about all of this is I'm feeling like I'm about to puke my guts out. I've been in the Foodservice industry for over four years and been a manager but I definitely feel like somebody's doing something wrong in the kitchen. I would not recommend and I will definitely not be coming back here. I have no idea how they have such a good rating. I'm not sure how you can give this place anything but 5-stars. You can tell that it's a family run restaurant that has great pride in their customer service and food. I was told that I had to try this place, so I took my wife there on date night. It was a little bit of a drive but boy was it worth it. We were welcomed immediately upon entering and seated right away. They then took the time to go over the menu and drink menu with us. When I mean go over, they answered every question we had, gave us recommendations based off of what we told them that we liked, and they NAILED IT! The Queso Fondito and guacamole and chips were amazing! You could tell that it was freshly made. My wife had the Bistec a la Mexicana and I had the Bistec al Chipotle. The flavor on both were out of this world. It was truly authentic! The drinks were top shelf and mixed perfectly. Our overall experience was 5+ stars, but Google will only let me give 5. Their fajitas were bomb. Lots of great flavors and a decent portion. I got their fajitas mixtas which is totally worth the price.

My bf got some baby burritos and a taco, which were also pretty good, but I enjoy fajitas much more.

The only reason it wasn't given 5 stars is because our waitress was clearly new. It took a while for menus to be brought out to us, and it was not busy at all maybe 2 tables tops were there as well (early in the evening). We had to ask for chips and salsa twice, and when I asked for corn tortillas with my fajita, I received flour instead. My bf who asked for a flour tortilla taco ended up getting corn.
