Sophie's Bistro holds a special place in my heart, as a cherished locale for celebrating milestones and any sort of occasions. Coming here since I was a child, the nostalgia of Sophie's comes alive with each visit, especially during the recent dual celebration of my and my mother's birthdays.
Upon entering , the warm and inviting ambiance welcomes diners into a space that's redolent with the rich culinary traditions of France. The menu is a delightful journey through classic French cuisine, offering dishes such as Coq Au Vin, Chocolate Sophie, Vol a Vent du Mar.
Don't miss the ‘Mussels Week'—a festivity of flavors where the bistro showcases multiple styles of mussels, tempting the palate with a variety of preparations. Its a tradition that has been heartily embraced by patrons and the extra bread is a must to sop up every last drop of the delicious broths.
Early arrivals to the bistro are greeted with a serene dining environment, offering a quiet reprieve before the bustling dinner crowd fills the space. However, as the evening progresses, the ambiance morphs into a lively and energetic milieu. The acoustics of the space, while charming, do allow for a significant volume increase, making the dining experience quite lively, albeit occasionally overwhelming. Nonetheless, the congenial chatter and laughter echoing through the bistro only add to the convivial atmosphere that Sophie's Bistro is well-loved for.
A small caveat though, the bistro can get quite noisy during peak hours, which might not cater to everyone's preference. Yet, the transient clamor is a small price to pay for the exquisite dining experience that awaits.
Every visit to Sophie's is not merely a meal, but an event—a celebration of good food, great company, and the enduring charm of French cuisine. Whether it's the allure of Mussels Week or the comforting familiarity of a well-loved childhood haunt, Sophie's continues to be a gastronomic haven that promises not just a meal,...
Read moreAs a longtime somerset county resident and a lover of French cuisine Ive always been curious about Sophie's Bistro. I came in with a friend and we had the escargot and steak frites with sauce au poivre. The escargot was rather bland, which is hard to do with a sauce made from herbs, butter and garlic. Speaking about garlic, in one of the pictures you'll notice that the escargot plate has a huge piece of raw garlic and the rest of the garlic looks burned which tasted bitter. The steak-frites with sauce au poivre was disappointing. The sauce was so thin that it was hardly there at all. If youre expecting a sauce au poivre like in a french restaurant then you might be disappointed too. The steak is COVERED with tiny bits of peppercorns, not whole, brined peppercorns and its not a pleasant mouthfeel. The steak was ordered medium rare but when i first cut into the edge of the steak it was practically grey. The steak got more tender in the middle, it wasn't bad but it certainly wasn't good, especially not for the price which doesnt reflect the quality. The saving grace of the whole meal were the fries which were thin, tasty and crisp. The food quality leaves lots to be desired. The young woman server was friendly enough but rushed us along the whole meal. The server and the other employees kept coming to try to take the plates away while we were still eating. Not five minutes after we said we were still eating did they come back. The gentleman at the host stand is congenial but the servers made the meal feel too quick and rushed which is certainly not very french. If you've never been to france or had french food before or even if you're in a rush then you might enjoy it. The food wasnt inedible but it wasnt very good and at this price point you expect quality food with good service and this place misses the mark, but maybe thats to be expected from a French restaurant that makes coq au vin with white wine....
Read moreSophie’s Bistro truly captures the essence of a charming French eatery. The atmosphere is quiet and intimate, perfect for savoring a meal without the pressure of rushed service. It’s a place where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your dining experience.
On our visit, we indulged in a delightful array of dishes: the trout almandine was perfectly seasoned, the steak au poivre was perfectly cooked, and the tart aux champignons was a savory delight. The standout was a unique blue cheese “pizza” topped with pears and sunflower seeds—an exquisite combination. The bread was hot and fresh, and even if it wasn't imported, the butter was exceptional.
The owner’s warmth and friendliness added to the experience. He made a point to engage with all the tables, creating a welcoming atmosphere that made us feel like regulars, despite it being our first visit.
The wine list is thoughtfully curated, and we particularly enjoyed their house-made liquor, which complemented our dessert beautifully. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality of the food and the overall experience made it feel justified rather than overpriced.
