I dropped in on the Great Wall to satisfy a crave for Chinese cuisine. It's a bit off my usual path, but I've driven past the space for more than a decade. Something closer to home (like cooking-in) seemed just "meh."
Lunchtime in semi-rural Grassland still has a homey feel. Judging by the crowd, I'm neither mistaken nor alone. The dining room is small and full. I'm greeted immediately from across the room and directed to join a table already in progress. It's New York deli elbow room with an Asian flair. "'Ey...buon giorno, ehhhā¦mazel tov..uhhh...ni hao...how's y'doin'?"
Luncheon specials are truly a value with entree and egg roll. Rice comes either steamed or fried, just know that "fried" means steamed tossed with soy sauce in a wok for umami sans sticky. The entrees are right-sized (not over-sized) and still may require a take out box.
Your mileage may vary, but beware that (no matter what kind of truck you drive) traffic in and around the Grassland shopping center is a challenge at times. If any level of traffic exists (which it usually does) you'll rarely win with a left turn across traffic to go south toward Franklin. Save everyone the hassle and take the northern end of the lot to the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis isn't a big place, somewhat what you would call a hole in the wall, but Lord was it fresh and tasty. It was a little crowded, I walked in on the for of my order pick.upntime and the person at the counter made clear that they are sorry there will be a short delay.
I waited less than 5 minutes:) in other places I waited way longer and got way less friendliness. Big thumbs up
I had spring rolls (those are fresh, not your typical deep frozen industrial trash) and my were they good. Big š
I also had the sour spicy soup....again, fresh and tasty another š
The pot stickers were also fresh and home made but not that great but still, very good.
The main dishes were fantastic. The brown rice had a fantastic bite, was absolutely perfect. We had one Luncheon dish which was more than enough and also absolutely tasty thumbs š. The other was a house special dish and was also great, fresh veggies, great crunch, super flavorful without being brutal (was a spicy dish).
I only gave 4 stars for atmosphere because deco was a little questionable and it was quite full. But aside of that absolutely amazing and will be back. If you see my other world wide ratings I am sparse with this much praise. This place...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe have been seeking a good Chinese restaurant for over 5 years. Up to this point we've been disappointed with restaurants that lump Thai, Malay, Japanese, Chinese and American/Asian cuisine all together with none of them being very good. At Great Wall we finally found a Chinese restaurant that offers genuine Szechuan & Hunan inspired dishes. Szechuan Chicken is very flavorful, although I'll ask them to increase the spice next time I get it. Moo Shi Pork is as good as we have had in the SF Bay Area or Hong Kong. Egg Foo Young, which you can't even find in most other local restaurants, is excellent. Fried dumplings, egg rolls, Sweet & Sour Chicken much better than any other local restaurant we have tried. Overall, great Chinese food. We'll be back. No more combination anything-that-sounds-Asian restaurants for us. Great Wall is a small restaurant/cafe with less than a dozen tables. We opted for take out since we live several miles away on the east side of Franklin. But, it's a pleasant place for take out or dine in. Finally, some real...
