A welcome and exciting addition to the Freehold Boro food scene, 7 Guys fills a niche and brings a bit more diversity to Main St.
I was surprised to see a spot opening with so many businesses being negatively impacted by the current pandemic situation. I wasn't sure about what to expect but felt hopeful, seeing that their logo included a shawarma cone. It had been a while since Freehold Boro could boast a decent gyro/shawarma/falafel joint and I had been missing it. I checked their online presence and saw that while the menu descriptions seemed a little vague, some of the pictures queued me in to what I should expect. The pricing seemed a bit higher than I would like, but I was definitely intrigued so I wasn't going to be deterred.
I stopped in yesterday,11/5/2020, to pick up lunch. My wife and I decided on the beef gyro platter and a chicken gyro platter. I ordered an extra side of falafel. We took the order to go and I immediately noticed the heft on the take away bag. The food was heavy. The portions felt solid and stacked.
We got the food home and opened it up......yo. The food was BANGING!!! Let me break it down for you. 7 Guys' gyro platters are a similar style to Halal Guys. The meal is a combo of rice, salad, meat, white sauce, hot sauce, and some pita. There is a ton of flavor in there. I say similar to Halal Guys, only as a reference of style, not quality. While their foundations are the same, 7 Guys blows Halal Guys away. Better meat, better rice, perfect level spice hot sauce. 7 Guys kills it on quality while Halal Guys banks on the hype.
My wife immediately remarked on the portion size. One order could easily feed two people. Her beef gyro was spot on. The meat was crisped on the edges but still tender and full of flavor. My chicken was cooked and spiced perfectly. The container was packed with a bed of rice that acted as a sponge to soak up the flavors. The white sauce and hot sauce were amazing.
The falafel side was also good. Nice and green. It didn't shine for me, but it was probably because I was eating a side of falafel with no sauces or accompaniments after I had just gorged myself on a meat platter. I will definitely be back to get a falafel wrap in the near future.
The meals were so big that I ate mine for lunch and dinner. I am not usually one for lunch leftovers as same day dinner, but I was actually looking forward to it and was just hoping I would be hungry enough. Just before dinner, I made a run back to 7 guys. I picked up a small hummus and some extra white sauce. I wanted to get a full read on this place after how good my lunch was. The hummus was top notch. It was garlicy and super smooth, I only wish I had ordered additional pita with it. My wife wasn't hungry, still full from lunch, but I urged her to try to the hummus. She tasted it and immediately made a run to Shoprite to grab a bag of pita chips. Her leftovers are still in the fridge this morning, and she doesn't know it yet, but I am stealing them for my lunch today.
On my second visit I struck up a conversation with the owner, Atif. He and his wife seem like really good people. Friendly, nice, and all about the food!! He mentioned some possible menu additions and I can only imagine how good those will be. Give them a shot, you won't be disappointed.
*Halal guys always rocks my stomach. I am guaranteed at least a few hours of discomfort and frequent bathroom visits after eating there.
I had no such issue after...
Read moreThis was my first time going to 7 Guys. My boyfriend and I hadn't eaten much, and we were walking in the boro. We were very lucky to have found such an amazing restaurant not only in food but also in their customer service!
We had the Falafel with rice and salad. The sauce was spectacular and unique in its taste as compared to any other places I've tried at. The rice was perfectly cooked with an amazing flavor. Falafel was flavorful and not dry. A satisfying and filling meal!
The owner and his family are extremely hardworking and provide quality food and service in every order. The restaurant is clean and well-organized. Atif is kind, considerate, and has a passion for his cooking that you can taste with every bite. The flavors have a rich depth- It felt like eating a home cooked meal with my family (who are from North India). I haven't felt that way with a restaurant in years.
There is no bluffing in these statements. Try it and you will find out! My boyfriend and I do not eat out often either because of being sensitive to foods and being allergic to nuts and soy, but I am pleased that I feel good after eating out here. They were very accommodating and helpful with us.
We will be back to try the dishes with meat next and the Chicken Tikka Masala! Thank you for a wonderful meal and time spent. You are setting a great example for what restaurant food should feel and be like! Keep up...
Read moreI was really craving a shawarma, as opposed to a gyro (I like both), so I googled to find shawarma near me. 7 Guys turned up in the search and it had all these great reviews. I was trying to figure out where it actually was and then figured out once we got there that it was where O.G. Steaks used to be. We used to eat there too.
My daughter and I had chicken shawarmas and my wife had a falafel shawarma. My daughter also wanted hummus and I wanted the rice after the owner gave us a sample.
The food was excellent and the portions are large. The shawarma more than met my craving. The rice reminded me of rice that I had had in the Middle East, as opposed to white rice which is usually served with gyros.
My wife and daughter both loved their food too.
The real surprise for me was the hummus. My wife and daughter generally love hummus in all forms. Generally, I don't like the hummus here. Only when I traveled to the Middle East did I like it. Well, I really loved the hummus from 7 Guys. This shocked my daughter who knows that I generally won't eat hummus. It went perfectly with their pita. My only recommendation is if you order hummus, to order extra pita bread to go with it.
So, it looks like 7 Guys will now go on our rotation of...
