We are from Connecticut, and during a recent trip to the Bay Area, we had the extreme good fortune to try the Afghan Awasana Kabob House. Oh my ... what an experience! The food was superb … an epicurean delight, but also plentiful, and very reasonably priced. The qabuli palow - a lamb shank dish was a standout, and the squash bolani - a stuffed flatbread was out of this world. The owner was very friendly during dinner, only to be surpassed by what happened after our dinner. Upon leaving, our car would not start. The owner offered to jump start our car. When that did not work, he offered us a ride back to the house where we were staying ... which we gratefully accepted. On the way, while we were thanking him profusely, he indicated that this was not an imposition as he routinely gave rides to his workers. I was moved to tears with his generosity. The Afghan Awasana Kabob House stimulated my palate, satiated my appetite, and above all, nourished my soul with renewed faith in the kindness of humanity. A truly memorable evening that will not soon...
Read moreI catered food for my husbands 40th bday party for a group of 50. I ordered Qabuli w/ chicken, chalau (white rice), murgh korma w/ aloo bukara, shami kabab, and mantu-the salad and naan came free with my order. My guests were a mix of Afghans and Punjabi-everyone loved the food, I even received texts the next day about how good the food was (shoutout to Wajma jaan!) I decided to try dine-in with my family of 8 this weekend. The food was absolutely delicious, their kabab puts De Afghanan to shame, who have adjusted their food for a Pakistani/Desi palate…Afghan Awsana keeps true to Afghan cuisine and is exactly how authentic Afghan food should taste. Service was excellent and Afghan hospitality is always on display! Only thing that will come with time, is a larger dining area and system of taking orders at the tables and not at the register. The hijabi girl at the register was a doll and so polite, we all really loved the food and our overall experience. Wishing this business the best of luck in all their...
Read moreFood/Taste/Flavor: 5/5 - ordered Mantoo (5 piece), Chapli Kabob, Chicken Kabob, and Beef Kabob. While they were out of Bakhlava, we were able to try some Firini. The mantoo was interesting as it’s a dumpling covered with a yogu sauce and ground beef seasoning. So while it has a savory aspect, it’s also extremely creamy. Both the chicken and beef kabob were tender and well marinated. We enjoyed the seasoning and spices in the chapli as well. The rice were flavored well and loved the salads. The firini is an Afghan milk pudding that is absolutely creamy with cardamom and rose water. While we enjoyed it, it’s definitely a particular flavor.
Service: 5/5 - very friendly and attentive. Mom and pop store vibe with how welcoming they were.
Ambiance: 5/5 - while it’s a small store with limited seating, it felt very cozy like walking into an Aunty’s house and asked to sit and eat.
Value for price: 5/5 - delicious food, friendly service, and cozy atmosphere. Highly recommended place and we can completely...
