The behavior of the owner of this establishment (or at least someone claiming to be the owner) was incredibly disappointing and unprofessional, and it’s the reason I’m writing this review. Such a shame - I’ve been to this location many times with my family, I will never do that again.
Earlier today, while dining at a neighboring restaurant in Niles Canyon (same block), I witnessed who claims to be the owner acting in a way that lacked integrity and basic kindness.
This lady was accompanied by a young boy with special needs and had just finished her meal when she asked the server if their bathroom was working. Unfortunately, the bathroom was temporarily unavailable ( I believe someone mentioned it was due to being locked from the inside—a minor issue likely to be resolved soon.)
The server politely apologized and suggested the restroom at the creamery on the corner, not realizing that this woman owned it.
Instead of appreciating the helpful suggestion, she scolded the server, saying, “You should not refer anyone to my creamery. This is my business, and don’t ever do that again.” The server was visibly embarrassed, immediately apologized, and promised not to do it again.
Here’s why this interaction left such a bad impression: Good neighbors support each other. It’s baffling that a dessert shop owner would discourage a neighboring restaurant employee from referring customers to her business… especially after a meal! Communities thrive when businesses work together, and this kind of hostility is not only unnecessary but counterproductive. The server was trying to help. The server had no way of knowing if the restroom was needed for the woman or the child with her, but she tried to do the right thing by offering a solution. Doing the right thing - , I refrained from complaining about this lady’s child’s loud outbursts during my lunch because kindness and understanding should be practiced and goes a long way. She clearly missed this life lesson. Her actions felt calculated and distasteful. If she really needed a restroom, why not use the one at her own business? Instead, she set up the server for failure with a confrontation that felt entirely unnecessary.
This behavior reflects poorly on her as a business owner and as a neighbor. My hope is that this review encourages her to reflect on her actions and make amends. The right thing to do would be to apologize to the server who was only trying to help.
Kindness and collaboration should be at the heart of any community, and this experience left me questioning her...
Read moreA cute little ice cream shoppe with a sort of quaint feel and some old-fashioned charm, Niles Ice Cream Sweets & Eats was the perfect place for a cool summer night.
Located in an equally lovable small town of Niles, we had a blast walking around with our scoops of flavorful ice cream. The Tin Roof flavor was sweet fudge swirls blended into its less-sweet counterpart vanilla ice cream to balance out the sweetness. The cookies and cream had obvious hints of chocolate cookie/oreo flavors. The Ube (purple yam) was the least sweet and reminded me very much of when my family used to get a tub of ube ice cream each week from an Asian market.
As with most ice cream places, they charge a little more than you normally would pay for ice cream, however the portions here are so generous, it felt worth it. Service was friendly here and the staff wears matching work t-shirts which further pulls the whole vintage-ice-cream-store theme together.
Niles Ice Cream Sweets & Eats not only offer delectable ice cream flavors, they also offer smoothies, hot dogs, and sundaes. I've never had a sundae before, so I suspect it won't be long until I revisit to try...
Read moreNot so good experience - more about the customer service. Went here on a Saturday at about 8 pm. Not many people around. Since this was our first visit here, as a local guide, took pictures and then tried entering the store. The girl at the counter rudely interjected mentioning that its a 6 person, 2 party store policy. In her defense, it is visible while entering the store, but who pays attention to the different stickers before entering a store? We hunkered back down waiting for our turn. We got in after one party left and then we were generally looking around in the store looking what flavors to buy - not try. It had not been a minute and like any first timer, we were talking among ourselves and asked her a couple of questions. Sounding impatient and disinterested, as if we have been there for an hour, she gives a blank stare and responds. We quickly bought a tub and left.
I definitely, will think before getting ice cream from this store. There are at least 3 ice cream stores on the same street. 2 stars for probably the only time we will get ice...
