This was probably one of the weirdest coffee experiences I've had in a long time. All the people that follow my reviews know that I love a high quality coffee shop, but this was such a mixed bag there was nothing else I could do other than give it three stars.
Let's start with the service. The service wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. It's the definition of middling. When you walk into this location, there isn't really a lot of room to maneuver before you hit the counter, so if there's a fair amount of people here, you kind of stack up at the front door.
The people in front of me were taking an exceptionally long time to order, and that was because almost everything they asked for wasn't available. I didn't think I arrived at this location too late in the day, but they were out of two of their most popular coffees. I found it a little bit weird that a coffee shop runs out of coffee.
I eventually made it to the counter and ordered my standard, I'm reviewing your establishment drink, which is a mocha latte by the way. When it was served to me it came out at the right temperature, was well flavored, and was generally pleasant. The problem is the environment was really non-conducive to drinking it.
It was the middle of a heat wave, and there was almost no indoor seating at this location at all. 99% of the seating locations are outside. I simply don't understand how they can function that way.
The interior is sparse in a way that reminds you of your first college apartment. It seems to be decorated with random assortments they found around thrift shops and slowly, and unevenly, populated the storefront. It just had a weird vibe.
There is a countertop traditionally found at coffee shops, the one with creamers and steering sticks on top, but because there were no holes cut in it the trash cans underneath had to be dragged in and out to be used. There were things like this everywhere that just made the whole thing seem weird.
It was like they had everyone else's second hand coffee fixtures that were found at Home Goods. They look great, but something's not quite right with them. Although, in the end it's the coffee that saves the review. Outside of the coffee, almost everything else seemed...
Read moreI came here for a coffee to enjoy while I checked out the monthly classic car meet. Seeing the reviews, I was hopeful to get a great cup of coffee... instead, I was met with disappointment.
I entered the tiny, but cozy cafe and headed to the cash register to order. There were two people working behind the counter. Both were hovering over the espresso machine and looked to be just flirting with each other. I waited a few minutes assuming that they were just finishing up an order and will be taking my order shortly. Nope. Another few minutes went by as I'm still standing at the register, and the girl looks up to make eye contact with me and then goes back to whatever she was doing. Then the guy does the same thing! I made eye contact with both of them, clearly they see me at the register waiting to order, but I chose to ignore me and continue to flirt with each other. I wanted a total of 10 minutes, and after no sign of customer service or even courtesy, I just opted to go across the street to the breakfast dinner (skillet'z cafe) instead. Great contrast by the way. I was greeted and seated instantly and had 4 different people check in on me while I enjoyed a very generously portioned scramble plate.
It's one thing to have to wait because the employees are busy cranking out orders, but it's just plain rude to see me waiting and just outright ignore that I'm even there. A simple "I'll be with you in a bit" would have been enough to let me know that I'm waiting for my turn to order instead of waiting to be ignored. Rude ass mf's can clean up the piss I left on their bathroom floor before I left.
Just kidding. I should have done it though. Anyways, don't go here if you value customer courtesy. Clearly, this...
Read moreI have nothing but good things to say about this Devout Coffee. Everywhere I go, I recommend this place to others. Yes the cafe is a little small so I wouldn’t say it’s the best for sitting down and the line can get long( but rightfully so because this place is so good!)
They change their espresso every once in a while and it never changes in quality no matter which roast they use. Their pastries I believe are baked goods from a Filipino bakery nearby and they taste unbelievable. I don’t like putting sugar in my coffee and their high quality coffee doesn’t need it either. Having the sweet pastry with the coffee( I get a cappuccino), is the perfect mix between the flavors. They have coffee for everyone and even tea, kombucha(canned in the fridge), hot chocolate, and they do it with love every single time. I’m from San Jose so I make the trip every other Sunday just to make sure I get this coffee. I also buy their coffee beans and I grind them at home and it tastes just as good as in the cafe. If I could give more stars I would. Glad to have such a great coffee in the Bay Area.
Also a plus is that it is located in a cozy strip full of antique shops, tea, silent film museums, farmers markets, and occasional vintage car shows during the weekend. The only downside would be parking sometimes is hard to find but I don’t mind walking because the area is so nice.
TLDR; great coffee, small place, Filipino baked goods, everything is made with love and...
