Decent coffee, but an absolute operational mess.

Coffee was good and aesthetically pleasing. Due to operational problems, we only got to try the latte, which was good. Not necessarily worth the headache we went through to get it, but if these problems are ironed out, I'd wouldn't be opposed to paying $6.50 for another latte.

Also, I appreciate Wen's dedication to her business. I see her responding to every review. Hopefully some of these points can help Voca improve. I think it has a lot of potential!

  1. Cashier lady was lacking in competency. She was slow, didn't know the menu, didn't communicate well, and just generally meandered around getting in people's way. There were dishes to bus, tables to wipe, coffee to serve, and a line out the door. Yet she didn't seem concerned and took her sweet time typing slowly on the iPad. My advice: train her better or hire someone else.
  2. Better communication. Several times, I noticed orders being prepared incorrectly. They would make an americano, just for the customer to say they ordered an iced americano or they would make a latte to realize the customer ordered an oat latte. Then, more often than not, after a drink is made, they would walk around looking for the customer, further slowing things down. These are all solveable problems.
  3. Simplify the menu. Too many items on the menu just exacerbates communication problems and slows things down as people ponder what to get. Especially for restaurant week, I'd simplify the menu from 8 offerings to 4 and skip the time-intensives drinks like pour overs.
  4. Keep dirty dishes away from unserved drinks and food. I couldn't help but notice dirty dishes piling up next to unserved tiramisu and drinks (photos included). This is a health violation and risks cross-contamination. Please take care to never do this again.
  5. Nit: The latte cups, while unique, are right-hand biased. For left-handed customers, they are very awkward to use. This isn't a big deal, but first impressions matter and attention to details matter.

I assume these are growing pains that will improve with time, so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and giving 4 stars, for what would otherwise be a...

This is one of those rare places where a bad review says more about the reviewer than the establishment itself.

When I visited Fremont, my buddy Steven picked me up from the airport, and our first stop was Voca Coffee. I usually go for espresso, but that day, I opted for a pour-over. I can confidently say it was the best Iโ€™ve ever had. Iโ€™ve officially converted to pour-overs. The flavors were both bright and bold, a combination thatโ€™s not easy to achieve in artisan coffee. The balance and clarity were exceptional.

Wen, the barista, took her time crafting my drink, and I appreciated every moment of it. Her attention to detail was evident, and when she brought it over, she didnโ€™t just hand me a cup, she shared its story. She described what I could expect in terms of flavor and even gave me some insight into the beautiful cup it was served in.

Yes, I waited about 45 minutes for my coffee, but here, the wait is part of the experience. Youโ€™re not just getting a drink; youโ€™re receiving something carefully and thoughtfully made. Wenโ€™s dedication ensures that every cup is worth the anticipation. My friend and I lingered for an hour or so, and honestly, Iโ€™d rather end my time at a cafรฉ with an extraordinary coffee than settle for something rushed and forgettable.

If youโ€™re after a quick, generic cup of coffee, this isnโ€™t your place. But if you appreciate craftsmanship and want something truly remarkable, Voca Coffee is an experience you donโ€™t...

Easily the best pourover I've had in Fremont. The bean options are varied and there is something for each taste profile. The Diego Bermudez washed Anaerobic Castillo was expertly roasted and showcased the hard work that was put into the roast profile. The pourover was like biting into a freshly baked peach cobbler. The prices are definitely on the higher end for coffee in the area (my pourover was 20 dollars and was the most expensive bean), but given the small lot size of the coffee and the attention and care put into the experience, I say it is worth it if you are into specialty coffee and want a treat!
