Here's an honest review. I have been a customer for many years. Babes BBQ is hit and miss with the service for the last few years. The ribs and brisket are delicious on the better days. They are both tender and juicy. On the bad days, you could whine up with burnt ends or something hard to chew. So, I advise all to-go orderers to check your food before leaving. It's hard to place an order over the phone 90% of the time, 5% - someone answers the phone but places you on hold & never comes back, then 5% - you get to place an order. I read a review that questioned the cleanliness. It's very valid. I have witnessed a food prep person who smoked a cigarette with the same glove he was wearing while preparing food. The person was smoking in a designated area & dialed their cellphone then returned to the kitchen and started back working. The individual never changed gloves. Just don't look through the to-go window. No, I didn't report the business to the health department. Some of the finest restaurants don't have clean kitchens and . I just took it out of our lunch rotation for a few months then checked their health inspection scores before returning. I do lunch pick ups for my co-workers. One of them received uncooked chicken tenders before. The kitchen is often in dismay. It happens a lot in kitchens during rush hours. However, I often wonder what the end of the day clean up process is like. Personally, I thought the ribs were better before the restaurant switched smokers a few years ago. This place is a mom & pop joint that has a very country down home vibe. I believe that the lack of quality workers is hurting the business, as it is hurting many food service businesses. The owners used to bake and sell some delicious cakes. Those were the places best days. Sometimes growth can kill a business' performance. Hopefully, that doesn't be the case...
Read moreBabe's Smokehouse at the Savannah Farmer's Market is the bigger little sister of a hole-in-the-wall, now closed, Babe's BBQ on US Hwy 80 as you're leaving Garden City. At first this larger business just provided a more comfortable environment to enjoy what was getting Que'd just down the road. Better and more varied sides and entrees expanded the menu from the meats and slaw lunch plates at the original. Now everything is under one roof and you can get anything from fried shrimp, very tasty, to the Hogzilla, a huge baked potato stuffed with all the best of the smoker. A favorite of working guys but big enough booths for your family too. The wait staff are pleasant but always rushed it seems. BBQ sauces are typical Savannah offerings due to our proximity to South Carolina and mustard based. But still good. Babe's at the Market, now just Babe's Smokehouse since there's just the one anymore, is a great place for lunch or early dinner. I'll be...
Read moreI can't believe I'm the first to review this place. The BBQ is very good including beef brisket which is somewhat unusual in Georgia. They serve a lunch special (I've only eaten lunch here) including meatloaf and other common country meals.
Try the Black & Blue sandwich; beef brisket, chipotle sauce, grilled onions and blue cheese. Ummmm. I also like the Redneck Reuben which substitutes beef brisket for corned beer. Ummmmm.
This restaurant is in the same place as Kessler's at the Farmers Market, a county breakfast and lunch place that must have been in business better than 50 years.
Service is usually pretty fast considering that the place is slammed with customers for a short time at lunch. If you arrive by 1130 or after 1230, things should be a little slower and you will not wait long. Price is right, the waitresses are very friendly and quick with the iced tea. No beer or wine...
