I will break down 3 parts, meat, soup, and dipping sauce.
-I ordered 24-pieces (Large size) marinated Flat Iron steak but I do recommend the beef belly as the fat make it taste better unless you prefer lean meat. You have to asked them to get the marinated meat because your soup gonna taste freaking good at the end after you dipped all the meat and marinated sauce in it. The 24 pieces-serving wasn't enough for me even though I ate all the Udon as well so I ate my sister's meat serving as well. So if you go alone then get more than Large size if you know you eat a lot. If you go with ladies then just order large sizes for all because the ladies are most likely won't be able to eat all of their meats.
-Soup I suggest Spicy Miso soup because the Miso or original is very bland/plain. I think you don't have to spend additional dollars to get other soup because spicy miso with the marinated meat is good enough. I used Udon as they ran out of rice.
-For dipping sauce, you HAVE to ask the waiter to give you at least 1 drop of their hot sauce into the sesame sauce then add some black sauce (I think it's ponzu) that they gave it to you with the sesame sauce then mix everything on the sesame sauce bowl. If you can't eat spicy at all then don't add it. If you prefer spicy then add more than 1 drop because it's super super spicy so anything above 3 drops might be bad for your health and stomach, in my opinion. Without their hot sauce the dipping sauce is not that good in my opinion. -Price: We went for 3 people and it was $89 total not counting tips yet so I would say the price was decent as we all so full after that. I put price range $30-50 because with the tips it was over $30 for us. Overall definitely...
Read moreSince it’s colder now, the place had a very long waitlist for a Friday night (we were 25thbin line at 8PM). I find the atmosphere to be very modern and the countertop invisible burners fascinated me with their flameless conduction lol. The servers are very patient when ordering (it was my boyfriend’s first shabu experience). I thought ordering 1 option of meat would be small, so my boyfriend and I had the “absolute best” idea to order more add-on meats. Of course, we greatly overestimated ourselves and mokkoji servings lol. Each person gets their own individual hot pot and their own choice of meat (with the option to add on or a combo of meats). We ordered 3 more add-ons and of course we had to take it back. The meat quality is quite good and fresh (there was no indication that the meat was old or had been kept frozen; all of our meats were tender, even when a little over cooked). I especially loved the tofu here! So soft and jiggly, but still holding firm, great mouth feel. The broth was lacking though—I had spicy miso, boyfriend had regular miso, both tasted like water with miso paste. They only provide 2 sauces it seems: ponzu and house peanut shabu sauce (which you can add spicy oil to). The peanut shabu sauce on its own was quite bland; the spicy oil they add KICKS, so be careful. I wish they had more sauces. I also tried the yuzu-nade and I found it quite tart with a sugary sticky after mouth feel, but if mixed with water, it became refreshing. Definitely a decent shabu place and a cool place to go to...
Read moreClean and busy hotpot restaurant, on the pricey side. We get fried chicken for appetizer and the Mokkoji sampler for $95 (definitely an overkill for two 😂) The fried chicken comes with radish and jalapenos. It's very crunchy and not the typical fried chicken coated w/ a doughy layer outside. As for the sampler they give us fatty belly, flat iron beef, shrimp, chicken, salmon, scallop, and some kind of meat paste thing. We order the original and the spicy pork broth. The broth tastes okay, nothing special. The original tastes like basic seaweed broth and the spicy pork broth is a mild version of the Shin Ramyun red ramen. As for the sampler, the best is the beef and fatty belly. They put garlic, green onions and vinegar soy sauce marinate on them and it definitely adds flavor to the meat. The seafood is fresh and nicely prepared so no complain there. However, the meat paste and the chicken are not good. They don't fit the rest of the sampler or the broth. The place will give you two dipping sauces, rice, udon and greens. The green is sadly little though they say they can refill it. The udon and rice are too much for the watery broth we have so we order ramen. Definitely get ramen if you can. Overall, it's not a bad experience but the ayce hotpot in Fountain Valley gives us wayyyy more options for everything. We probably...
