$15 lunch $19 dinner AYCE Asian / American buffet aimed for Mexican taste. The place is nice, clean, spacious, about 60% occupied on Friday at 3PM, so it's popular.
You pay on entrance, given plastic cups for free sodas, and choose your own tables. This set up reduces the number of workers required to operate the front desk efficiently, only 1 cashier and 3 cleaning crew were working to keep everything tidy. By employing fewer workers they may survive, even make a good business in the cut throat Asian buffet market
They play Rock and Mexican Banda music fairly loud. I wish they lower the volume a bit
The food is surprisingly good with very good varieties, cooked to Mexican taste. Fill your own sodas , included.
Very good salad bar with large varieties.
Sushi station is small, tastes ok, but with no sashimi people would just take proteins off sushis for themselves.
The beef pot roast is tender and the very tasty. This dish alone with fried chicken pay for the meal IMHO. Fried chicken is fairly salty. Could use less salt and more clove or Cummins. Couple indistinct fried / braised pork to crisp, tasteless.
There were Cajun shrimp and large crawfish, delish, people were eating large plates of them. Soups were good, clam chowder uses cream of corn, not dairy cream, smells a little like corn tortillas. Pepper shrimp was good.
Unfortunately all stir fried veggies are overcooked to a mush for Mexican taste.
The Mongolian station let you choose frozen proteins and veggies with your own sauce. I told the Mexican cook to do rare red beef, emphasized to him again, but he still way overcooked meat and veggies to tough and tasteless, again per Mexican taste .
Very good desert station with cheesecake, cream pie, various cakes, soft ice cream, but very few fruits.
Food is fresh and tasty, not over spiced or loaded with sugar or MSG. We were happy with the quality of our meal for this low price, very good value, even free meals on birthdays. This place seems successful with good attendance and low operating cost.
Left a good tip at table for the cheerful cleaning woman. My partner now says food at Kumo is seasoned and cooked more like authentic chinese. It's her favorite Asian buffet in OC, has...
Read moreIt's been a very long time since we've eaten at a Chinese fusion buffet that we wanted to relive our childhood memories and revisit nostalgia. We invited my parents as well to join us since the reviews appeared relatively positive for a new establishment.
Located on Chapman in the same plaza as Dollar Tree and See's Candies, it sits on a corner with plenty of parking available. The line was already out the door at 5pm and you pay before getting seated. It's $19.99 per person and $18.99 if you're a senior citizen (60+ with proof of ID) for dinner. They walk you to your table and let you know that the receipt indicates whether you are still eating or finished. When finished, you turn the receipt over.
Once we all understood the rules, we headed to the service stations. The first station when you walk in contains the salad bar, sushi, and fresh fruit/jello. The second station is the Mongolian BBQ where you select toppings (beef, chicken, seafood, vegetables, noodles, etc) and the chefs will stir fry your selection. The third station contains desserts (cakes, cotton candy, and ice cream bar with toppings). The long wall along the back contains your hot foods: fried foods, seafood (crawfish, clams, mussels), wings, pizza, ribs, meatloaf, etc.
While there wasn't anything that stood out as a must-have, there were some I found acceptable as repeats: eel nigiri sushi (but too much rice) crawfish (flavor could be better) fried shrimp & cheese wonton fresh fruit (pineapple, cantaloupe and honeydew were all sweet) banana pudding
I was really looking forward to the desserts, but the cakes were so dry and then everything was warm or room temperature: cheesecake, coconut pie, pound cake, carrot cake - WARM. Everything eventually tasted the same because it was too sweet.
Not to mention, low air-circulation inside. If you are seated near the windows, it can get a little toasty. As it gets more crowded during rush hour, the whole dining room becomes very crowded. You'll have to be quick on your feet to navigate waves of people walking in all direction. It can be a bit chaotic inside.
Overall, nice to try but most likely won't go out of our...
