Shanghai Restaurant — Restaurant in Gautier

Had a long & tedious day so dropped in on my home just to see if same people had it. I was so overwhelmed by being greeted by May who after about 8-10 years not seeing me REMEMBERED ME!!! We chatted briefly, I asked about her boy's & family. She is such a cheerful person. She sat me near the buffet & got me (the best anywhere) tea. I started with the egg drop (WONderful !!!!) then moved to the buffett. How I've stayed away from that General Chicken is beyond me....I won't again I bet!!! If it wasn't lunch time I MIGHT have ordered the Happy Family ! As usual at lunch very very busy but you'd see the buffet being tended to regularly & quickly with fresh fare...don't just plop it on top but blend nicely. I actually started coming here in 1996, sometimes thru the rear entrance. Amazed how CLEEEEEEAN that kitchen was/still is) remember when May was studying for her citizenship. Took her several attempts but she made it & was so proud. Me too, of her! (Not so easy people.) She studied harder than I did thru all 12 years + some. So wonderful she, her husband & family came to treat us to such tasty treats !!! Not even in Dallas, have I enjoyed such a completely enjoyable meal...Thank you May & family... I'll not stay away so long again. My husband will be in soon ;) I hope 20+ year's from now your son's or thier children will still be warmly caring for those who...

My first attempt at finding Chinese in Gautier was not pleasant. I didn't know the restaurant doesn't have combination plates so when I ordered sweet and sour chicken with pork fried rice I didn't expect to be charged almost double what I usually pay everywhere else I've ever ordered this. Then I opened the food. The chicken was swimming in sweet and sour sauce. I would have asked for it on the side as it is in every other Chinese restaurant I've ever been in if I'd known. The fried rice looked and tasted like it had been cooked on a flat top grill that needed cleaning. It had black bits ( not burnt pork) all through it. And you would think the chicken came with white rice since I got charged separately but no. Finally the overall taste of the food was very bland. My search for good Chinese food in Gautier continues. I will not go back to this restaurant again. Just to clarify- this was a call in order that I picked up. And I've ended my search and learned to make my own fried rice....

We ordered a variety of main dishes, soups, and the little donuts. It was all really horrible, except the donuts which were decent but overcooked. We ate it only because we paid for it. There was little to no flavor in any of the dishes other than a hint of sesame, maybe watered down soy sauce ( because it was brownish), and possibly some old deep fry oil used for pan sauteing? I added my own soy and salt and still couldn't make it taste right. The staff was nice but seemed stressed out by the takeout orders. I hate it because it would be awesome to have great local Asian food. I tried one other time and it was mediocre, but bland. We spent $62 and won't again. Sakura Express in Pascagoula never disappoints and will probably continue to go there...
