The bottom line: there's still some kinks to work out, but Napoli's will be a great restaurant for Glasgow if they can maintain a high level of quality and unique food offerings. We ate there on Saturday afternoon, July 20th - the second day they were officially opeed.
Soup We requested our soup/salad side dishes prior to the appetizers. Soup was a cream of spinach and artichoke. Was just ok - a bit watery and not really all that exciting.
Salad We were told that the salad was just a house salad, so we asked if it could be made a Caesar salad. The server told us it would not be a problem. However, when it arrived, it literally contained these ingredients: Iceberg Lettuce Tomatoes Croutons Caesar Dressing POWDERED Parmasean Cheese
Perhaps the lettuce was just an oversight, but POWDERED parmasean? We asked the server if we could get grated parmasean instead, and she returned with a small bowl of (get ready for this...) more powdered parmasean. We had to laugh at this a little. We did ask about it and were told that it was due to the fact that it was only their second day. I understand that not everything is going to be correct so early, but what Italian restaurant does NOT have real parmasean cheese??? It's practically one of the basic primary ingredients that DEFINES an Italian restaurant! Would it have been that hard to run over to IGA to grab a few bricks? I'm sorry, but this one is unforgivable.
Bread Complimentary fresh bread was given to us and holy moly - it was some of the best yeasty bread I've ever had. Very soft, dusted with salt / parmasean (I think). We were not served butter, but honestly, it didn't need it. Bread - 5/5
Appetizer We ordered the stuffed mushrooms appetizer. We asked specifically about the crab and were told that it did contain real king crab (not imitation). The dish was 4 very nicely sized stufed mushrooms smothered in a roasted pepper cream sauce. The mushrooms were fine, but the stuffing was overly "bready" and you couldn't taste the crab at all. The pepper/cream sauce was outstanding and there was a HUGE amount of it. Mushroom Appetizer - 3.5/5.
Entrees Veal Piccata - 2 generous portions of veal cooked absolutely to perfection served over spaghetti noodles with a white wine / caper / lemon sauce. Wonderfully tart, flavorful, and the veal was incredibly tender and delicious. Spaghetti noodles were just ok. Veal Entree - 4.5/5
Frutti Di Mare - Scallops, mussels, clams, shrimp in pasta with alfredo sauce. This dish was incredibly rich and creamy. Seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly. Portion size was enormous. Seafood entree - 5/5
Service Service was extremely good. No complaints whatsoever. 5/5
Atmosphere / Ambiance / Other Nice wooden tables, feels a little "packed in", but it's a nice place. Extremely clean. The utensils were probably the cheapest crappy fork/knife/spoon sets found in the industry. Also, the table salt and pepper were store-bought plastic grinders. Some people might think this is being picky, but when you are going to present yourselves as an "expensive" restaurant for the area, little things will make a difference.
Prices If the above "bumps" were fixed, I would still say that the prices were a bit high, especially considering that this is Glasgow and there's not a large number of scratch restaurants here to compete with. Compared to similar resaturants in Bowling Green (440 Main, Bistro, Novo, etc.) Napoli's is still just a tad on the high side. Not egregiously so, but still. I worry that this will dissuade people from going here and choosing Gondolier's instead.
Summary We will certainly be coming back after some time to see if they worked out all the kinks. The menu here offers dishes that you will not find at similar restaurants and this is what will help differentiate Napoli's from everyone else. I hope to see some very unique "daily specials" that are made from scratch - I would absolutely be compelled to visit more often if that...
Read moreThis was my first experience at Napoli's, located at 607 Happy Valley Road in Glasgow, and I chose to dine in for lunch today, Tuesday. I wanted to try a variety of different things to get a fair assessment of their cooking skills and if it is, in fact, genuine Italian food. Upon entering I was greeted by Alex, my server. Very welcoming. The restaurant was very clean and smelled amazing.
I started off with the soup of the day, a wonderfully seasoned tomato-based creation. The soup was my first favorite dish. Next arrived the side of meatballs along with the cheesy bread with some rich and creamy Alfredo sauce. The meatballs were so deliciously plump and juicy. A great combination with their impeccable marina sauce. The cheesy bread had just the right amount of cheese and garlic. Whether I dipped it in the Alfredo sauce or took a bite of the bread alone, both were a nice treat to my pallet. The Alfredo was my second favorite. Then came the main course. I had the Pasta Sampler which includes the Manicotti, the Lasagna and the Spinach Ravioli with marinara. The star of this dish was absolutely the Spinach Ravioli, my ultimate favorite of all. Next time, I will be ordering a plate of just the Spinach Ravioli. It was incredibly scrumptious and I left wanting more. However, I had ordered enough food for an army and left with a couple of to-go boxes, to enjoy more of it at a later time. Finally, I couldn't resist taking home a slice of their strawberry cheesecake, which later proved to be the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. It was amazing.)
I browsed the menu online for hours before deciding what I wanted to try during my first visit. It was an extremely enjoyable experience. The owner came around a few times to check how I was doing and asked if I was enjoying everything. My incredibly stellar server, Alex was very gracious, polite and attentive, and the chit chat was nice too. A combination of great food with great service was just what I needed today. As I left to get into my car, Alex waived goodbye to me from the other side of the parking lot. That was nice.
I highly recommend everyone going to Napoli's and enjoying some truly genuine Italian food, that will leave you stuffed and smiling! I will definitely...
Read moreOkay so after reading both reviews on Yelp the negative one definitely felt honest but I didn't want to cook and I'm so over the same old places, so we decided to roll the dice.
My husband got the Portabella Mushroom Ravioli and he said it was great, he did say the Alfredo had minced garlic in it which is different than he is use to but still very good.
I had the Tortellini Alla Panna w/chicken and it was divine! It took me back to my favorite Italian restaurant where I would order this same thing.. food that can transport you to the past can be very powerful.
The rolls were also very good. We also got the Tarmisu was amazing.. my husband doesn't eat dessert like ever and he ate a lot.
To address the negative review, yes there are no white table cloths but the restaurant is decorated very nicely. About the wine, and them posting a picture of a rack of wine, yes they currently don't serve alcohol but that's due to liquor license taking awhile to obtain. They do have a nice little bar area that I'm sure they will have stocked with wine ASAP. So the "canned red sauce" comment.. we did not get anything with it but after trying my sauce I highly doubt the marinara is canned. Everything I saw come out looked very good definitely one of the best restaurants in Glasgow. I agree stock photos need to be switched out but thats an easy fix.
We moved from Texas, I have a culinary degree and we eat upscale home cooked meals every night. So I feel like if you read the bad review and didn't go due to it, ignore it and try it.. very good and great service!
Sorry for bad pics I used my daughters old phone to take them since my son was on...
