I want to make sure I update my post from below becauseI don't think my 1 bad experienceduring lunch time is fair to make bad judgment after going to the restaurantseveral time before and after. The Tavern has always been one of our favorite places to eat in the area. We usually go in the evenings, and the food and service is usually good. We have been back in the evenings since my post below, but it took a while before we decided to go back. When we went back, the food and service were good. The following is from a lunchtime experience in 2015: Really disappointed today. This is usually one of my favorite places to go in the area but haven't been in several months and also have never gone at lunch time. We went at 1:30pm today and did not get out of there until about 3pm. Service was SUPER slow and not quite altogether. Not sure if they were understaffed but I'm pretty sure our waiter is normally the bus boy and didn't quite know what was going on. I had to ask a couple times for a glass of water. My husband's chicken Capri sandwich was not so good. My pumpkin chicken and ravioli was still as good as it had been for me in the past but my salad was half frozen. I also noticed that the ladies room was really not as clean as it should have been and my feet really stuck to the floor. we also weren't offered the desert that came with my son's meal. I'm really disappointed because I've always looked forward to going to the tavern when we can and now I'm not sure I want to...

Very Overpriced, & it has gone downhill from the past. Some foods aren't worth ordering at all. We went for New Years Eve Dinner & paid only $15.00 for a bottle of Champagne- but $25.00 for a Filet Mingnon w/ Potato & Veg., Salad, Bread & Complimentary Soup & Crackers at serve yourself station. That wasn't too bad- considering they had a limited menu for the Holiday. However - depending on where you sit- the chairs move they slide backward constantly while trying to eat- & are sitting on a slanted floor. That happened the last time we went for a night meal & was disappointed with the noise level & an overpriced appetizer -for what we got. The rest of the order was ok. The place is known for being Haunted & people have sworn they have seen or felt ghosts there & they had a write up in The Valley Breeze last yr. about it & they hold a Special Event Yearly for that-- a Special Night to see if you can see any Ghosts or some such thing- probably around Halloween Time in Oct.- that you need tickets for & it is always sold out! If you decide to go for dinner anyway- I suggest making a Reservation 1st- for anywhere from Fri night-& Weekend Days/Nights or Anytime During Holiday Stroll Weeks in Dec.. I once went for Just 2 Desserts & 2 glasses of Wine- good- but still pricy! You could get a whole dinner for 2 elsewhere for the same price or a little more, including dessert or dessert for 2 to share & wine or beer!...

VERY DISAPPOINTED!! Tavern on Main has been our go to for years and we always loved it. Today's visit changed that for good. Most definitely will not be going back. This was our first time there since the change of mgmt. and couldn't have been more disappointed. I ordered the fried haddock and was unable to eat most of it due to it being FULL of bones! The peas were cold, and as for the baked potato, it was also cold and most of the inside of the potato was brown. My husband ordered a seafood dish which also arrived lukewarm at best. We ordered a cup of N.E. clam chowder as well which was basically a cup of floured milk with a few potatoes and clams and the flavor was extremely lacking. I mentioned the issue of the bones in the fish to our server (who was the only good part of our visit) and he said he was going back to inform the kitchen only to come back out with our bill and put it on the table. I had not asked for a discount on the bill (although it should have been immediately offered) and there was also no offer to remove the charge for the fish dinner. The manager couldn't even be bothered to come out to our table to talk to us. The restaurant was NOT busy at all so no excuse. This was rude and showed only to be completely unapologetic and insensitive to the issue. Sadly, this historic and once wonderful restaurant is not even close to what...

4 stars but room for improvement. The food has been wonderful. Salads a bit on the smaller side, but the house dressing was tasty. The main portions have been amazing but side sides have not been anything to brag about. The furniture was falling apart, BUT it is old. They forgot my drink for a long while I had to ask again. The pot roast came out cold in some spots... The environment is awsome to look at BUT could be spruce up somehow... and the music in dining room was sooo loud i really noticed it... Good location. Historical building. Good desert and prime rib.

I have going here for years and I have given several "second chances". The food portions have decreased substantially. Today I ordered the 20oz (King Cut) and it was the portion of a Tavern Cut 14oz. This has become the norm. Charge for a King Cut and provide a Tavern Cut while at the same time having signs up that they have to increase the price of the prime rib due to the cost of beef. Maybe this is just a bait and switch tactic on take out orders. By the time you bring it home its too late. Do better people.

From the outside, I had no idea what to expect. It isn't the most inviting place... until you get inside. Not only were the staff friendly, but the patrons (who were all locals) were even nicer. The portions were huge and the food was well worth the price. Drinks were also very reasonable... only downside were the bugs inside, but that's what happens when you're dining in a building from the 1800's.
