Sometimes its difficult to write a thoughtful post, especially where food is concerned because its easy to say, "It's good!" and convey what you mean. However, simply saying The Corner Mexican Food is "good" doesn't do it justice. The restaurant is unassuming and off the beaten path; that theme continues inside. Its simple. Theres a place to sit, there's a menu to look at. Hand-written poster board hang on the wall displaying the daily specials as well as pictures of the menu items. It's a start-up which is why the food is so impressive. After ordering, there's a complimentary basket of chips with salsa. Here's what I love: while its all the chips and salsa you can eat, they bring a small-ish basket and small cup of salsa. It didn't encourage me to eat my weight in chips and salsa. It was just right. We liked the salsa so much we brought home a 20 oz cup! I ordered a ground beef sopas and a pastor sopas. My husband ordered 2 gorditas. Portion: 1 sopas would have been plenty but getting 2 gave me variety. The gorditas were also large and filling. Chicken on the gordita was diced and lean, but juicy. The spice was spot on. The ground beef had a rich flavor and the pastor was seasoned well, with a tiny bit of spice and onions. My husband said it was the best Mexican he'd ever had. I have to concur; after spending several month in Mexico several years ago, I've struggled to find authentic central Mexican cuisine. Most "authentic" Mexican food is from the Northern region but its was awesome to find Pacific coastal region and Bajio authentic so finding food akin to my time in MC and Puebla has been difficult. Chef Alejandro makes delicious food, loves his work and it shows. This is definitely a "can't miss" in the KC area...
Read moreI have been here many times (20+). Overall, I have had a positive experience except for today.
Over time, this place has improved. They started out with poor decor and a small, non-aesthetic menu in a place that was kind of beaten down. But their food is authentic and delicoous.
Over time, they have improved their decor and made a menu that is more aesthetic, with more food options. I generally have recommended friends here often, toting it as the best (of like 10) Mexican places within a mile.
After today, however, it will likely be a while before I go back and I will not be recommending this place.
It wasn't a big deal, but it rubbed me the wrong way. I showed up and was going to place a to-go order. They usually serve free chips and tacos if you are dining in, while you wait for your food. I wanted some chips and salsa while I waited for my to go order to cook. They started they don't do that, despite me asking for it. So I voted with my wallet and went to one of the other 5 Mexicans places within a mile where I am now sitting, waiting for my order munching on some free chips and salsa.
If you do go here, try the torta cubana. It is delicious, stuffed with all sorts of yummy meats and guacamole. They have great chips and guacamole. And a unique dish with cactus on it. A good place, but with all the competition in town, I am going to choose a place with better service. Maybe I will try this place again in a year or so (I went about 20 times in the last year; so they lost that over some chips and salsa for the...
Read moreHad the worst lunch I've had in a while here. So bad I just felt compelled to write on it. Sticky tables & salt shakers were the first inkling I had of a bad experience, shoulda left instead of switching to a less-sticky booth. I suppose it's my fault for even sitting down at a booth - when the first thing you read walking in the door is 'WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ITEMS ON YOUR ORDER' you should probably take a hint. Our server was very inexperienced when it came to restaurant work, opting to clean all of the tables around us off before taking our order. This woman was startlingly rude, didn't speak up when asking what we wanted, and served us the de res birria tacos instead of the chicken after asking me to repeat what I said when I asked for chicken birria, claiming she didn't hear me say chicken (but I couldn't hear what she was saying half of the time - I was so confused haha). Baffled, I had to let them know I would not be paying for the tacos after taking one bite, promptly spitting it out and telling them we were done. I had to wait 10 minutes while they tried to explain the situation to a chef in order to. take it off of my order. There is clearly no passion here and a huge lack of communication between the staff. They should probably call it a day after the recent reviews I read detailing similar experiences. Also, don't charge a dollar extra for consome. There are twenty places within 10 minutes of this place that serve better birria, and don't charge for what should come with it. Don't waste your time or...
