Nothing Bundt Cakes — Restaurant in Gurnee

OREO Cookies & Cream Bundt Cake: Nothing Bundt Cakes (NBC) has become one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I especially enjoy their individual sized “bundtlets”. With this fan favorite flavor, NBC takes their traditional white cake and stuffs it with OREO cookie pieces (along with their amazing cream cheese frosting). The cake itself is a white cake that I would actually argue is a light yellow. To be honest, I was a little surprised they didn’t go with a chocolate base flavor with it being an OREO cake. I’m not complaining as I prefer yellow cake. I was initially skeptical that OREO pieces were in it as it kind of looked simply like chocolate cake combined with white cake. I could not have been further from the truth though as the cookie pieces offer a distinct, crisp texture. Further evidence was provided when I found a piece of OREO cookie that had some of the distinct cream filling still with it. One of the best aspects of NBC's cakes is the exceptional moistness of the cakes and that holds true with this one. There’s the same great ratio of sweet cream cheese frosting to cake, with the pièce de résistance being a giant dollop on its summit. This is slightly deceitful and the first time I saw the bundt cakes I thought they would need more of their signature cream cheese frosting, but trust me, there’s plenty (and I’m a frosting nut). These are delicious cakes and usually fantastic customer service. I recently pre-ordered a cake for my daughter's birthday party (prepaid), and when I picked it up, the cashier brought my cake out, and it was falling apart around the base of the cake. I told the cashier I would like another cake because this was for my daughter's birthday party, she stated she would have to get Kathy. Kathy is the manager/owner she came over to speak with me about the condition of this cake, by telling me that this is the way the cakes come out, they have old baking pans and that no cake is perfect. I shared with Kathy that I have brought cakes from Nothing Bundts for years from other franchises, and all the cakes had been in excellent condition I could not understand why a cake shop would try and pass off a cake in such poor condition. Kathy told me she could go in the back and get me another cake, but it would be a twenty-minute wait, remember this cake was pre-ordered and today is my daughter's birthday. I shared with Kathy that I did not have twenty-minutes, which is why I pre-ordered the cake. Kathy rudely said to me; I'm trying to help you. So, I agreed to wait while Kathy brought out two other cakes for me to look at, so I had the choice of choosing the best cake out of three poorly baked cakes. The anger I felt, and feelings I have towards this cake shop and the disappointment in the poor customer service is beyond me. I will not be buying cakes anymore from Nothing Bundt...

Six days ago, I made my 1st visit to the Gurnee store. I was excited because I had heard nothing but great things. The store itself did not disappoint. Though very small inside; the decor, products,and aromas lingering from inside were absolutely hypnotic.

My excitement grew as I watched the store attendant assist the two ladies ahead of me in line. They laughed, talked, discussed flavors and exchanged pleasantries. Immediately!! The two ladies left the store and so did the smiles and pleasantries. As I stepped to the counter waiting to be greeted, the formality never happened. The clerk never said hello, yet offered warm welcomes beyond me and to the next customer entering the store. Insisting to have a great experience in spite of, I thought I'd recenter the missed opportunity:

Me: Hello! How are you today? Attendant: Hi. Do you know what you want?

What happened to the smiles, and professionalism that I witnessed just moments ago? I wanted to make a purchase to see what the hype was all about, though the staff does not seem to offer equal service to everyone.

I cannot support this location. I will try again at a different store. The lemon and red velvet were both good, but not good enough to be treated as if we were unwanted and unwelcomed.
