El Vaquero Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Hallettsville

Perfectly acceptable small town Tex-Mex. For pros, the service is friendly, pretty speedy, and the menu has a huge selection.

I went to lunch here on Saturday with an old friend who lives in Hallettsville. I had one of their combination plates. (By the way, I appreciate that the combination plates come without rice and beans unless requested.) My combination plate consisted of two crispy tacos and a small cup of queso. The tacos had a good flavor but the meat needed draining. In fact, the meat made the shells so soggy that both my friend and I ended up needing a fork to cut up and eat the tacos. The queso had a good flavor but the tostado shell was so small as to prevent you from dipping chips to get the queso, meaning I ended up trying to just eat the shell with the queso in it. The chips and salsa were spot on.

Placed a pick up order and clearly stated that I wanted beef fajitas for 2, it was also repeated back to me. Went to pick up my order and it was incorrect, they gave me the beef chicken and shrimp fajitas. I let them know that my order was incorrect and she told me no, that is what I ordered. I told her that no, I ordered beef only because my boyfriend is allergic to shrimp so I would have not ordered that. She grabbed my bag and went into the kitchen. When she came back out with my beef fajitas I said thank you and asked if there was a price difference knowing the all beef fajitas were less than the trio. She flat out told me no and turned and walked away. We will not be coming back. I don’t care about the 4.00 difference it’s the fact that she lied to me and walked off like I was bothering her. My wife and I are from out of state. The one thing we always enjoy in this area is great Mexican food. El Vaquero did not disappoint! The food and the service are great. We were treated with genuine kindness. We were seated and our drinks of choice were immediately brought to the table. Krista enjoyed the margaritas. My beer was served along with a frosted mug! We enjoyed their especial queso. So good! The beef fajitas and "#6" (beef taco, cheese enchilada, and queso puff) were fantastic. We will be back here in one month when we return to this area.
