This place is a little hole in the wall place. It is located right next to an automotive repair business so looks are not the best around the area next to it. The building is a bit old as well. Inside isn’t the newest but looks can be deceiving.
It was fast service to be seated. The place isn’t super big but it was big enough I think because the parking is hard to come by to be able to eat here. We noticed some people come in and get food to go.
Service was good. She brought everything we asked for. She was helpful with questions about the menu as well. Average response time for bringing extra butter, syrup, etc. My water never got refilled though and we were there for over 45 minutes sitting down.
The menu was quite interesting.
I got the buttermilk pancakes which I thought were a little dry. They were good but not my favorite. I would prefer IHOP pancakes over these. The restaurant or waitress seemed to be a bit skimpy on the butter. They only brought me enough butter to barely fit on one of the pancakes. I got the short stack so it was 2 pancakes. I wouldn’t order the pancakes again. They weren’t as fluffy as I like them.
I got the whole wheat biscuit to try out and it was good for a wheat biscuit.
One of my breakfast guests got the burrito bowl. It was good. He said he would order it again.
The lemon poppy seed pancakes were really good. My friend said she would order it again.
The bacon was good but nothing special.
The sourdough French toast was good my friend said. He would get it again. He ate it all.
The home fries were fried chunks of potatoes. They were good and crispy but nothing special. The ketchup on the table that I used to dip the potatoes in tasted homemade and we are pretty sure it was homemade.
Prices were not bad. About average for breakfast.
I seemed to be the oddball out at this restaurant since the other 3 people I was with preferred this place over Thunderbird Café that we went to the other day and I preferred their food. The 4 stars are from my...
Read moreThe Little Grill Collective was a huge disappointment. There are two reasons it was such a disappointment. First, we went here after our vacation and before we headed home as a goodbye meal with our family. Sadly this restaurant is not kid friendly. My young son was having a lovely meal and as many of us do, needed to go to the bathroom. Well, there are no changing facilities. That's fine, we've all been there right? So as I get my stuff out to change my son, a hostess comes over and tells me that I can't. When I asked what she would suggest, she told me to change him in the car. It's winter, and on top of that, they do not have a parking lot so we were parked down the street. If you want to take your kid with you instead of leave them in the car like the animal she then said was also not welcome (as if my kid is comparable to an animal), don't come here. Second, they say it's a vegetarian restaurant with vegan options and also meat. I always get super excited when cooks know their way around traditional foods that can be vegan because I am very lactose intolerant. In this case, I expected to be able to eat pretty much everything as that is supposed to be the specialty here. Sadly, that was not the case. I could have buckwheat pancakes, not French toast (which I have easily ordered at a diner) or any other kinds of pancakes. I ended up ordering the huevos rancheros. It was very good, but being dairy free, I rarely get to eat breakfast foods out and was really looking forward to some normal pancakes or rocking French toast.
They have a good mission (co-op) and the food I had was good. I cannot see returning with my son though, and the reaction of the lady seriously soured me on the place. My family was all dragged there by me, and we all left feeling unwanted and inconvenient. That's how I feel every meal because of the lactose intolerance. This restaurant was my chance to feel good about it for a change. So...
Read moreWe love going to this little place. Has a fun, energetic vibe! Also has more veggie and vegan options than most cafes in Harrisonburg. Unfortunately, I can no longer take the vegan breakfast foods they serve. However their Mexican food is great and can be made vegan.
I just wish this co-op included someone with a little more knowledge of how to prepare delicious, HEALTHY food. If you go here for breakfast, be prepared for eating some heavy, high-fat food and virtually no fruit or veggies to help offset all that fat.
For vegans, their tofu "scramble" is flavorful, but it is really cubed tofu that has been heavily seasoned and fried. Nothing like the moist, lightly sauteed tofu scramble recipes I make at home that have lots of healthy chopped veggies mixed in. What wouldn't I give to be served a breakfast like that!
Their side of soysage is a heavy, sticky patty that tastes too much like mushed up turkey dressing. Even the way they served my Everything Bagel today was way too heavy! It was brushed with butter or Earth Balance and then flattened and cooked on the grill - far too long. This was first time I've ever had a grilled bagel! Very disappointing.
This is really just how they like their food, though, so I did not complain. All their vegan breakfast foods disappoint me bc they leave me feeling fat and heavy after I eat them. Really need some fruit to lighten them up!
I had their buckwheat pancakes the other day, and they were way too thick ( 3/4") and really heavy and pasty. No amount of Earth Balance or real maple syrup could help them go down easily. Just sticks to the mouth. Ugh!
They are very vegan-friendly at TLG, so my hubby and I will continue eating here, just not for breakfast! Instead, we'll go when they are serving authentic Mexican food, which can be made vegan for us. 😃 Used to be served just once a week. Not sure now, but hope more often. THAT food was...
