Island Cuisine — Restaurant in Hartford

I've been getting takeout from here for years and I have never been disappointed, unless they're out of pepper steak... I've tried just about every other Jamaican takeout in Hartford, and many other cities, but this is by far my favorite. Everything that they make here is consistently done well. If you enjoyed what you had here 2 years ago, it would taste the exact same if you got it today, which is of course always amazing! Their peppered steak, rice and peas, and vegetables is delicious. I've ordered here 3x, since I've known of them for some years. Normally, I order a small dish and you get a reasonable amount of food for the price. I would recommend. The only downside to this restaurant is the location. Its in an area, where many addictive personalities are and the homeless walking in asking for money or food. I'm for helping the underserved, but it makes you feel obligated when you're in a confined space being asked for something. I think they should avoid this interruption in service to...

Went well before closing, but was met with very limited options. No hot food was on display which was disappointing. The pepper steak didn’t look very appetizing, but overall was OK. The gravy was very oily and the meat was a bit tough but had a nice spicy flavor which paired well with the white rice and sweet plantains. The overcrowding and busy atmosphere of the plaza makes it a bit worrisome to be in the area. The cashier was very friendly and inviting.
