The South Smokin BBQ — Restaurant in Hayward

This rustic, off-the-book, southern mom-and-pop establishment is the best barbecue spot I have visited in California. I often walk by this place and have never been inside to try their food. Since I was feeling saucy, I tried them for the first time today and ordered a brisket sandwich with a peach cobbler. It was smoke-tacular!! Tender meat and sweet-tasting cobbler that makes you stop and savor it. The owner, Tim, arrived with more food supplies and asked if I was enjoying the food. I gave him a resounding “It is great.” He even told the present customers how he became an experienced cook in the Navy. After hearing his backstory, Tom asked if I was full, and I told him I was not. To which he responded, “You don't pay that much and not get full.” So he generously offered me another entree similar to what I ordered but with an equally tender tri-tip at no charge. I cannot believe I almost gave this place a 4-star rating. It truly deserves five stars. No diggity. The restaurant and the staff have a friendly ambiance, and the food is top-quality, which makes up for the prices that may not suit the fancy of others. Wasn’t My Cup Of Tea …. Grateful for the young lady giving me a refund … I felt bad when she ask me was the food good and I tell her no … I felt like old boy on sugar hill gang when he ate at his friend house … my old school folks know the song… lol I should of known it was all bad when they didn’t have chicken or links … on a good note the sweet tea was banging…. I wish Everett &Jones was still open 😞 They had the best bbq in Hayward hands down!!!!

Here i gave you two stars … but that’s not going to change the fact that your food was nasty … I’m a decent person and honest when it comes to bbq that was my first time coming there an i wasn’t impressed at all …. But like I said in my post I appreciate that the lady offered us a refund… we didn’t ask for it … she probably noticed that we wasn’t eating it and i told her that we weren’t satisfied with the food … I’m not trying to smash your establishment I’m just expressing my opinion … I grew up on flints and E&J bbq … I never had to get a refund lol … so to your response we got a refund because your food wasn’t what i grew up on … Sorry if I offended you … but ya we will not be returning to your...

I had the brisket sandwich combo. Cajun fries with cheese and mac n cheese. Also had the cornbread and peach cobbler. $38

It's kind of pricey, but not by much. I'd say it was a $30 meal, although they did add a lot of fries.

The owner is a hell of a guy, welcoming and hilarious.

The decor is definitely dated.

The food was ok but not good, if that makes sense. Let's see the scores.

The brisket sandwich was ok, atleast a 3 out of 5.

The hot bbq sause was actually good. 4 out of 5.

The fries alone would have been 4 out of 5 but the cheese they added on it made it a 3 out of 5.

The mac n cheese, just got served from what had been sitting on the bottom of the hotplate or something, 2 out of 5.

Cornbread was good, 4 out of 5 but a little too much butter.

The peach cobbler. I say this with the out most respect... terrible, horrible, disgusting, gross, boarder line poisoning. 0 out of 5. I'm being honest when I say this, it tasted like what Raid...
