It was a huge surprise when I found out me and my sister had booked a Doctors appointment on the same day! We had about 45 minutes in between the appointments, so we decided to get a quick lunch around the area. Especially because we both drive 30-45 minutes to get to our doctor's office. In my search of a place to eat, I saw this cafe and I knew I wanted to try it out.
My first impression when walking up to and inside is that this place is adorable. The decor and style of the cafe felt like a cozy spot to rest and I was excited even before I saw a menu. Once inside, the screen with the menu was detailed so it took a minute or two for us to decide what to order. The staff and other patrons we're patient and kind. The person who took our order was joyful especially when I asked about one of the items on the daily specials board that caught my eye and ordering a lavender honey latte just as she was suggesting it.
Once our order was placed we sat at a few chairs by the window and not long after, our drinks were called. I ordered a Lavender Honey Oatmilk latte (love that they have multiple non-dairy milks) and my sister got an unsweetened iced tea. The latte was warm and cozy with a hint of sweet, just like the cafe itself. I am told the tea was really good as well.
Next, for our food. The Cranberry Turkey and Classic Turkey Sandwiches were fantastic. Both came with a pickle and chips. When the wait-staff brought over our food, they also took care to bring to-go containers because I had mentioned that we would need our orders to be to-go in case we didn't finish them. How kind! The last thing ordered was from their daily specials. This was a whipped ricotta toast. It had apples, walnuts, and honey (I think?) and it was phenomenal!
I know this is a super long review, so thank you for taking the time to read it. I just wanted to share my joy with this wonderful cafe. Next time I am around this area, I will definitely be...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf I didn't have a 20min drive to get there, The Flour Girl Cafe (and soon to open Flour Girl Bakery) would be one of my regular stops for breakfast and lunch. The new owner has done an amazing job during the transfer of ownership and throughout Covid. The food is very tasty. I haven't had a bad experience. I still have a few sandwiches to try, but everything so far has been wonderful. Waffles are great too. I can't wait for the bakery to open. Parking will thankfully increase soon with the new lot going in. I think once that lot opens, the parking area in front should be cordoned off to allow more outside seating out front during the warmer months. The live music that I have occasionally been able to experience there has been great. I like the direction things are going in at the Flour Girl Cafe. The only negatives I've experienced are that the sandwiches have been a bit smaller than expected and the temperature of espresso drinks has been inconsistent. All veggies except avocado should be free to add to sandwiches and the choice of meat on the breakfast sandwich (bacon/sausage/ham) should be included in the advertised price. Just my opinion. It would also be nice to have specials, type of daily soup, and more baked goods listed on the online ordering platform. Sometimes I walk in and see items on the specials list or baked goods in the case that I would have liked to have tried if I had only known they were available ahead of time...I don't always have time to check social media for potential daily specials and always order ahead of time online since driving from a ways away. Overall Flour Girl is definitely a 5 star Cafe though. Those duffins (sp?) were also awesome. Should be available every day in the fall and winter. Good luck with the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt does not make sense for one with a gluten sensitivity to go into a cafe called the Flour Girl Cafe, but if you say 'flour" out loud, it sounds ilke "flower," so, whatevah, guy. My goal was to "coffee, coffee, coffee" as Lorelai Gilmore does. Not "bagel, bagel, bagel" as others may do.
But the Flour Girl Cafe is a curiosity, because for such a rural part of Connecticut, it has quite the independent spirit. And for a town to support a business like this, as Hebron is not a population center, is indicative of a healthy town spirit. The Flour Girl Cafe is sorely needed in places like Fort Fairfield, Maine, or a town center outside of the more urbane areas of a Southern region. It feels like a place where everyone can gather. Where people are welcome.
It kind of reminded me of Star's Hollow from Gilmore Girls. Star's Hollow is modelled after a town in CT called Washington, which is west of Hartford, while Hebron is east of Hartford, but the feel of a town center is there. I parked in a lot and walked along a brick addled sidewalk towards the Flour Girl Cafe to get my coffee.
Approaching it was wonderful, because you could see a lot of what the town of Hebron has to offer. But once I got in, there was a variety of places to sit, menu options to pick from, and a display case that would allow a glutenous customer to select from.
A coffee was purchased here, hehe. But one can see where the time flies by when visiting Flour Girl Cafe. I recommend that you stop by here with a friend to see what Connecticut has to offer. Choose something from their menu, grab a beverage and walk along the town center. It has the feel of a quiet town, but it also feels like it welcomes everyone who might need a bite to eat, or at least, a...
