A couple years ago while the turnpike was undergoing that massive widening project and I was looking for a good way to get around the congestion I tried coming through Hightstown out to Rte 130 and while stuck in traffic going through town I noticed this what appeared to be a quaint little diner similar to ones I remember while growing up in South Jersey. I thought that if I ever had a chance to come through town when I wasn't pressed for time I would check them out and see how they were. I realized two weeks ago that I would have that opportunity on a return trip from Newark Airport however as I drove by there I realized that there was no where to park the bus other than along the road a half block away in the pouring rain. I decided that I would wait a little longer and was fortunate that it was only a bit more than a week later I was able to stop in. Upon arriving a little after 7:00 on a Sunday morning the parking lot was empty which had me concerned that they were not open yet but then I did see someone through the window so knew I was okay. Being empty was a good thing since it also meant they were not too busy to take care of me which they did with no complaints from me on the service and a praise also for having a decent size coffee cup and not one of those stupid tiny little cups that you have to refill 4 or 5 times before your meal is done. Speaking of the coffee it was better than many of the other diners I have been in so I do not think you will be disappointed if you order it. Not having ever been there before I had to peruse the menu a while before making my choice and decided that just as I do at other places I ordered a breakfast that had a little of everything, sausage, bacon, eggs, home fries, toast and pork roll which I have never liked but was glad when they were willing to change it for another slice of bacon. The bacon was cooked just the way I like it, a little soft but a little crispy as well and the sausage was also very good as it was the small breakfast links instead of the nasty fat sausage that other places use. Definitely worth stopping in though I don't know i I will again as I don't get the opportunity to go that way with extra time...
Read moreFirst off, the friendliness was awful. Not a smile or nod from most of the workers. Figured I’d support a local business. My Bad. All other restaurants made good for their customers if the need was required. Gave us water but never asked us if we wanted a beverage. We had to tell him we wanted a beverage. SMH I ordered “ NEW Western Chicken Pasta $17.95“ which was decent, my grandson ordered Penne Vodka $16.95. The Penne Vodka was horrible and there was way more than 1/2 left because it was that horrible. It tasted like sweet ketchup, so we told them and then ordered a burger which was $10.95 on top of everything else. It was good. So now the bill came to $52.35 before tax. BTW, They took the Penne Vodka dish away. So We asked them if they could remove the Penne dish cost and they said NO. So then she took $2.00 off the bill (Woop,Woop). Wouldn’t budge anymore. It’s pasta, not chicken or shrimp, it’s Pasta so what was the big deal. We were there quite some time trying to correct this mess. End result, We paid $60.00 with the tip so the end result was she took off $2.00 because we gave the server a $10.00 tip. Expensive experience and we would have eaten there more often if they weren’t Soooooo petty. Won’t ever go back there again. They are not reasonable.. Nice atmosphere, not good interaction at all. Too petty for me. Accommodations all around were just not there. Also she said that we were the only ones who complained. Then I told her we are Italian and know good Penne Vodka. In the photos,The light Penne is in the pan. There is no comparison with the dark dish Penne ( which is the diner version) vs. the lighter Penne. What should have been $35.40 without tax, it was $49.65 then...
Read moreIf you are thinking of going here to eat - GO! I have never eaten in New Jersey, so whilst driving back to New Hampshire from North Carolina, instead of finding a highway stop, we looked and found this diner. The people here are super friendly, and the staff obviously love working there and together, creating a great vibe. Our wait person was super friendly and helpful. The food is The Best Diner Food! I had a three egg veggie omelet and home fries. The omelet was incredible. I swapped out the tomatoes for extra cheese and it went down so well, and was so filling. The home fries were a cross between what I consider home-fries (cubed or chopped up tats) and hashbrowns and were the best I have eaten in a long time. I didn't sully them with ketchup they were so good! My wife had an egg in a muffin and really enjoyed her food too. The coffee - great. AND, and they do fresh squeezed orange juice, which I am told people come in to get. We shared a glass, thinking it would be the usual small glass but it came in a tall glass and was the most refreshing drink! And it has that classic diner look! Always a big...
