Title should be go to Viet Sub down the road if it's a weekday.
I ordered the pork Banh Mi, the iced coffee, and the special for the day. Usually a Banh Mi has a spicy from the mayo and jalapenos, a sweet and vinegar kick from the pickled daikon and carrots, a tart and bitterness from a little fish sauce, a fatty savory flavor from the pork, and that crisp finish from cilantro and cucumber. This sandwich had spice and fat going for it on a crusty bread. None of the diversity of flavors I expecte from one of my favorite types of sandwiches. The ICE "coffee" was more ice than anything else. I understand a cup that is maybe even 2/3rds ice to save money a lot of places do it but this cup was all ice and it was the small chunks so they pack down more and even take up more space and less room for coffee. I have also had lots of Vietnamese coffees in the past from fresh made, to bottles there and shipped over, to bottles in the US, to packets of a spice packet with sugar you add to normal coffee and this tasted closest to the spice packet. The special was fried pancakes with shrimp bites. It was the saving grace of the meal but was still also very oily. Lastly I didn't pay attention to when I went in but I looked at their clock after I had been there for a while and I was there at least another 20 min. I understand they were crowded but two other people came in after me and each got their food first. Then lastly they gave me a to go bag with no napkins or silverware. Oveall...
Read moreA new hidden treasure in Roanoke dining. The small café atmosphere is complimented by a staff that makes you feel as if you were invited to their kitchen. Food is freshly prepared to order with choice ingredients and obviously home style recipes. It is in the Lamplighter Mall on Williamson road across the street from the Salvation Army store and The Tobacco Company.
I ordered traditional vegetable pho, a vegetable egg roll and a pot of freshly brewed jasmine tea. I have only eaten pho a handful of times in my life. This was by far the most mouth watering pho I have ever eaten. It was bursting with flavors in a delicate broth which was served in a large bowl that I was sure I would not be able to finish. It was so good I didn't notice that I had gotten down to last perfectly cooked noodle and drop of broth and I was longing for more. When the egg roll was served the friendly, pleasant attentive, host, cook and server and I am guessing owner warned me that it was hot. I was thinking temperature wise so I left it to cool. She meant hot as in spicy . It was the first freshly made eggroll I have ever had with a kick, not overwhelming but just enough to compliment the crispy exterior and fresh seasoned vegetable stuffing.
I visited It's Pho time based on a news article that was recommending 5 newly opened restaurants in the Roanoke area, It's Pho Time is the only one of the 5 actually in Roanoke. This review was true to its word and pointed to a new little...
Read moreI have been searching for some good international food since I moved here and I found it. This whole little corner has a couple different areas of the world that I can't wait to try out.
Spring rolls were fresh, dipping sauces made in house and fantastic, pho broth was well developed and there was a lot of it.
Price is great for what you get. Service is fine for a sit down place. You get a sheet where you check off what you want to order and put your name on it to ensure any mistakes are your own. Make sure you ask if you have questions, although they seem perfectly willing to fix mistakes that happen.
Ambiance is quaint, family oriented with a small space with a select few tables. Mostly up to 4 but can be pushed together for larger parties. Make sure you call ahead if you have 5+ people eating or get there early. For as hidden as this place is they had a constant stream of customers both eat in...
