Holland's Shelter Creek Restaurant — Restaurant in Holly Ridge

Poor business practices. My fiance worked for this place for a few weeks now and has had a good experience working there, he was under the impression that things were going well and there were good relations between him and the staff.

We went there tonight to eat, I love the food and so does he and we thought we could have a decent anniversary meal at his job. He thought he was going to be getting his employee discount so we only brought a certain amount of money with us and do not carry cash.

He was going to tip the girl the next day when he came in and we had pulled cash out, but a few hours after we left they texted him and fired him because "him not leaving a tip was unprofessional and I dont think this is working out" and that was the reasoning for letting him go. Then afterwards my fiance defended himself and told them that he was going to bring cash in to tip her tomorrow morning when he came in and she returned with more "reasons" why they were firing him as well of which none of these things were brought up to him before this. There were no write ups, he had even worked earlier in the day and no one had brought any issues up to him then, either.

On top of all that since we are going to be petty, they refused me food. I wanted catfish bites and wanted some fried shrimp on the side and was willing to pay for it but they denied me it and didnt really give me a reason other than "We just can't do that".

So don't work here, dont eat here. Thanks for a great anniversary present yall. So much for southern...

Updated review We won't eat here anymore. Food quality has gone downhill. Last time I got a dirty baked potatoe, literally had dirt on it, it was unwashed. They did replace it, but we had to go pick it up. This time, I got chicken strips and only got one decent sized chicken strip and 3 the size of my thumb and a handful of fries. This usually is 2 meals for me and it barely was one meal. Not only have they practically doubled the prices in the last 2 years, but have also decreased the food the past 6 months. We have slowly decreased the amount of times we ordered from here and this was the nail in the coffin for us. I'm glad I got an extra ranch bc they also decided to put the ranch in a dinky container instead of the good sized container they did prior. The ranch didn't even go for half my chicken. Holly Ridge is already lacking for good places to eat and this is just one more place off our list. Food is pretty decent, always fresh. Hushpuppies are great. Our only complaint is that prices are getting too high. We'd eat here more often if prices were more reasonable. I understand prices have gone up everywhere, but other restaurants have managed to keep prices somewhat reasonable, so not sure why their prices keep creeping up over and over. Decided to stop in and give this local establishment a shot at satisfying our taste buds. The overall appearance looks great! Love the interior decor! The wait staff and servers were very friendly and knowledgeable. There are pictures of the 1st location (on the wall outside of the restroom doors) that flooded with every hurricane...finally succumbing to Hurricane Florence in 2018. The owner relocated the restaurant from Burgaw to Surf City. This is a seafood restaurant first and foremost. So if you don't like seafood, you might not enjoy eating here. One of us ordered a cheeseburger, the other ordered the pork chop dinner. The burger was good, along with the crinkle fries (had to be ordered separately). The chops were somewhat bland....not really any seasoning but were battered. Overall the food was good. The restrooms were extremely clean which was nice. The locals can attest to this restaurant as a local favorite. You might see a small town mayor, pastor, school teacher or local fire, police or rescue eat a bite here. Overall I loved this place. I'm not big on seafood, nor did I try any from the menu. Nice spacious dining area with another dining room for overflow. Go on and give it a try. No harm, no foul. I always try to support local business as best as I can, when I can. For two meals, our bill only came to 20.60!! Considerably cheaper price than what I thought our bill would...
