Many restaurant reviews talk only about food quality, prices and service; all of that certainly being importantly relevant and helpful. BUT, there are some other customer impressions that may inform, as well. Such as ...
MIKE'S CONEY ISLAND RESTAURANT -- Holly Plaza, Holly, MI ---
It is a relatively small place as restaurants go, but that alone seems to create a cozy, comfortable ambiance. One does not get a crowded feeling, but rather one of friendly neighborliness.
One interesting feature for older diners is the short strip of red-cushioned, mushroom-like stools lining a low counter. Once, seats like these were a common feature of drug and even department stores that served mostly sodas, sundaes, burgers & fries; forerunners of today's fast-food drive-ins. In this instance, they are an efficient means of accommodating solo customers who do not need a whole booth. But, what about the food? Hang on.
Now, many marketing studies have shown that people will travel long distances to patronize a business where they know and like the people running it. They will even bypass many other similar establishments along the way. In this case, the double reasons are named Emily and Amber, each cute beauty having her own pleasant brand of sociability and competency. If you leave "Mike's place" without experiencing at least one smile, chuckle or laugh, you are definitely in need of a helping therapist; with dolls? 🤔
Okay, the food. Listen! If you Google Mikes Coney Island, there are literally dozens of highly positive comments all over the net describing the many culinary delights of this local treasure. All I can offer from personal experience is that for breakfast, order the Steak & Eggs. The hash browns are REALLY a crispy, golden brown, the eggs & toast are perfect and nothing is over seasoned!
( If you'd like a bit more of salt -- IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION to many -- that's up to you.)
AND, the steak is NOT a small, tough, chemically-tenderized offering, but rather, a very flavorful, full-sized, grilled, New York Strip that takes up most of the separate dinner plate on which it is served. To summarize, I left Mike's with the word "EXCELLENT" on my lips.
Overall, if you've been to Mike's you already know all of the above. If not, visit soon and hopefully you won't end up needing that...
Read moreWe took my daughter to a Valentine's party in Holly yesterday. It was about a half hour drive from home, so my wife and I decided to stay in the area and get dinner and enjoy a meal without the kids. We drove in every direction about 10 minutes to find somewhere that looked ok. We passed by a lot of places that just didn't appeal to me. Ever since covid ruined my taste and smell, I am NEVER happy with restaurant food. This place was like last resort. Walking up I didn't even want to go in. I was worried the food would suck and my wife would see me dissatisfied yet again. But we went in and we ate. There were extremely busy and very understaffed. The dread set in.
This was the best food I've had in 3 years. You know how there is good food, but then there is REALLY GOOD food. Like every bite just overwhelms your taste buds. That eye closing mmmmmmmm of flavor. That is what this place offers. After my second bite, my wife look at me in disbelief 🫢. Absolutely shocked. She could tell by my face that I was actually enjoying my meal. Aside from the food, the staff was great. They all worked as a team. Everyone was very friendly and very attentive. This was by far the best restaurant experience I've had in a long time. So thank you, thank you, thank you for being there. We...
Read moreMike's Coney Island Restaurant has the hometown, family-owned, diner aesthetic that you see in movies, come alive in a quaint little place in Holly, MI.
Because I'm from Ohio and I had never been to a "coney island restaurant" before, I had to have my friend, who moved to Ohio from Michigan when he was a teenager, explain one to me. If I ever find myself up this way again I will definitely keep this cute little diner on my list.
The waitress was really friendly, and was patient with me while I tried to figure out what I wanted. She was smiling and easygoing and seemed to really like waitressing there. She answered my questions and was prompt with getting back to us with our orders.
I ordered an Irish Hash (scrambled) with wheat toast and an OJ. I have never had that much cheese, corned beef, mushrooms, eggs, hash browns, and onions in front of me on a plate before in my life, and I enjoyed every bit of it.
Unfortunately, I couldn't tell the waitresses how much I loved their place before I had to leave for more orchard touring, so I hope that this review...
