After seeing that this was a Yelp #1 pick for 2024, our family decided to swing by. It's a small, unassuming, local business in an old business center. There's no huge, electric signs or corporate branding here. Ignore all that and focus on the food, which is wonderful.
We arrived in the 6 o'clock hour, on the last Tuesday in September, in the middle of a steady flow of customers who filled the restaurant and flowed outside. I heard the cashier tell people before and after me in line that they don't do asada, chicken or pork: just beef birria. This was obvious from the menu; but, threw off people who came for Californian Mexican food and didn't know what birria is.
The birria here is a well spiced, rich beef, cooked in consommé until it falls into shreds of meat. This meat is drained and served in a number of ways. The basic way is on corn tortillas that have been lightly fried in consommé, taco style, with onions, cilantro, and salsa on the side. The consommé isn't really oily here and is generally ordered separately for use as a dipping sauce. The beef is really the star here, and it is done right.
We ordered 1 of each type of taco (which amounts to a difference of toppings and portion of beef provided), plus 3 quesabirria combinations. The rice and beans provided with the combos are well done, without being too wet, oily or dry. The red salsa is paste-like and has a real kick that is about flavor more than just plain heat, complementing the consommé well. The cheese in the quesabirrias is a tangy, good match for the meat.
Desserts and sodas are nothing special, being packaged stuff you can get at most mercados.
The agua frescas are a delight. We had the cucumber/lime and the horchata. The cucumber drink kept the cucumber strong with lots of minced bits of the fruit. The horchata was so heavily spiced that it was beige and looked like condensed milk.
I think you'll love most of the menu if you like the flavor of the beef, which doesn't need any help. It puts most shredded beef at other places to shame.
I found the cilantro, onions, and lime a distraction that dulled the flavor of the meat. Call me crazy, but I think a dash of crema (not offered) would be better than all that veg.
If you're looking really hard at the chicken wings or fingers, you either have a stubborn child with you or a delusion about Mexican food. Again, this place specializes in beef birria. Focus...
Read moreSept 28 2024 Well, I decided to try Birrieria little Tijuana after seeing the raving review on the 11 o’clock news
I was quite surprised to hear that they were rated the best tacos in all of California. That’s a pretty high praise, considering how many places there are to buy tacos in California ha ha.
I consider myself quite the food connoisseur, especially on Mexican food
upon my arrival, I noticed that there were many other customers also there due to the advertisement on television
When I got to the front of the line, the young men that were working, there were very friendly and courteous
I ordered the two taco combo it came with beans and rice $10.99 I also ordered a child’s french fry and quesadilla $4.99
I sat down at the table with a couple of friends that came with me to the restaurant and within five minutes or so we had our food pretty good timing, considering how busy they were.
well, I have to say the tacos were not lacking in meat at all the meat was moist and tasty and quite a hefty amount in the tacos the rice and beans were just mediocre
The french fries were pretty good, but the quesadilla was lacking in size and cheese, and was quite greasy.
Overall, the food was very filling and tasty
The downside is they don’t have fountain drinks and $4.50 is too much for a small bottle of Coke with no refills so my suggestion is if you choose to go there bring your own soda.
OK here’s the biggest problem after purchasing my mail which should have been $10.99 plus $4.99 should have equaled 1598+ tax roughly $1.60 equaling = $17.58
However, I was charged $20.65 that is an over charge of $3.08 with no explanation as to why
So my advice is if you go here, make sure to check your receipt against the...
