Honestly, not big on reviews but thought this would be note worthy for some, especially those who have supported this local store like I have, but will not continue after the extremely rude conversation I had with who I believe was the owner Jason. I had called like I usually do to ask about the pastry selection and voiced my plight, I was then prompted to share my thoughts, which I was happy to chat about in a professional/consumer way and as I did I was met with sarcasm and animosity and was belittled the entire conversation. I was then quizzed regarding my experience when I mentioned I use to bake for a well known company in the states. Ultimately, I had to shut the conversation down and got off the phone because it was turning into a blame session with snarky comments like “if you can promise me you’ll come in every day” and “we’re not rich”. I guess me coming 1-2x(out if your 5 days your open) a week, plus my family, and friends that work next door and across the street from your store and the moms at the ballet class I take my daughter to isn’t enough free marketing and sales for you! Count me out! If you didn’t want a real adult conversation all you had to do is shut your mouth, apologize and get off the phone not turn this on the customer. Don’t bother...
Read moreIn search of the perfect kouign amann, I now pronounce my search ended. Not because I found it, but I found it's cousin instead. I found a perfectly crafted croissant with all the main attributes of its' lesser known relative; outer flaky layers that melt like butter as soon as they sense the warmth of your tongue, and inner layers with the perfect chewy mouth feel primordially programmed to elicit joy in humans.
The French were really on to something, but this particular pastry was created in Kaimuki by a local girl that was going to go to med school. ( I was tipped off to Local General by a visiting professor from UCSF, in the city of Arsicault).
Try it with a good cup of coffee ( and it needs to be Damn Good! to keep up) to get your mouth to sing.
Nahenahe: If you're lucky enough to be able to do this on a beautiful Sunday morning in East Honolulu, with gentle trades wafting you in pure leaf scented air...then enjoy and let your heart sing🥰
Review note: I purchased the chocolate almond croissant at the LG stand at the Saturday KCC Farmers market, and re-toasted with steam infusion ( Wonder Oven) at home the next morning. This review is based on that experience. I plan to make regular visits to this store based on...
Read moreFINALLY a local butcher shop in Kaimuki!!!! And all of their meats are 100% local Hawai'i-raised meats from local farms. And all of their pastries and baked goods are mouthwateringly delicious! Where else can you find a Cinnamon Roll Croissant, a Pastrami & Cheese Croissant, or a Lychee Pastry that's this delicious?? It's no wonder they sell out of their pastries EVERY. DAY. I love a good butcher shop because they can customize any cut of meat you want and give you recommendations based on what you're making or how many people you're feeding. None of the animal is wasted, and you know exactly what quality you're getting, which is literally the best quality! They make their own frozen beef stock and custom sausages, and even make their own spam! Everything is good, every time I go. You can't go wrong here. ...
