Pandemic Review: I needed to kill time after putting in a walk-in reservation nearby at Kokohead Cafe. You can't even sit down without reserving a table with the reference desk... Which then you can't do without a library card... Which you can't do unless you're local even growing up there my card expired after 10 years after moving to the mainland... Which after that means you have to SURRENDER your driver's license JUST to sit down and read a book.
Looking back, I might as well have stood around to read but felt disappointed by their over exaggerated COVID-19 protocols to a point where I'd rather walk around compared to surrendering valuable like my ID.
Like with most things related to public sector industry in Hawaii, the leadership and rules are just lolo and need better rationale on how to handle menial tasks. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if libraries make you surrender your birth certificate or license just to enjoy the AC or park there....
Read moreOne of my favorite public libraries on the island. The place is buzzing with a lot of exciting energy, so many members of the public spent time here which makes it feel very lively. The collection of books are massive and relevant, it doesn't feel like a dusty library with outdated books. I particularly appreciated many titles on Hawai'i, be it fiction, non-fiction or other forms of media like vinyl records containing rare albums which I would not be able to get in conventional stores. The children's section was exciting and colorful, and I see teenagers hanging out at the library too which is always so positive. The alternative was Kaimuki Q.The library used to have a computer room with just two Apple IIe computer. And you have to take a test to show them that you know how to use the computer.
