Honolulu has a lot of great restaurants when it comes to Asian food, especially Japanese, but it is not easy to find good European food. Luckily for us, there is Breadshop in Kaimuki, which is a bakery that sells excellent Danish and croissants. The place is owned by Christopher Sy, whom I was pleasantly surprised to learn is an alumna of my alma mater, the University of Chicago. He then went onto cook at some of the worlds best restaurants, including Tru, Alinea, and The French Laundry before coming back to Honolulu to open his new bakery.
We got the pastry box, which came with the Makaha Mango and Tolentino Honey Cake Danish, Kaya Calamansi Brioche Tart, Prosciutto and Gruyère Croissant, and Blueberry Corn Muffin Bostock. My friend that I went with is a judge on Food Network Canada’s Top Chef Canada and we both agreed that the pastries here are on par with pastries that you can get in international cities like Paris, New York, and Tokyo using unique local ingredients.
I only wish that they had seating and that we could order and pay at the counter instead of online. Hopefully they will continue to be successful so that they will be able to get a bigger place in the...
Read moreAfter my first time trying their bread, I think I kept ordering bread for 3 weeks straight and I stepped on the scale and wondered why I gained 5 lbs. oh yeah I know why.
Their olive bread was so addicting, it's worth gaining 5 lbs for. I think I ate the whole loaf by myself in 2 days (ideally you finish everything in 3 hours so maybe grab a friend instead of going solo.) The crust was crunchy on the outside and it's so soft inside with bits of olive lodged randomly between the fibers of dough. The dough was also salted perfectly. I said 3 hours because you don't want it to dry out. That's definitely my go-to item after trying other stuff.
Their guava roll was also good. It's great for breakfast with your coffee. I also tried other pastries - hit or miss, and still I like the bread most.
I ordered online for pickup. I don't think they take walk-in orders so you'll have to preorder stuff.
It's a bit pricey but good bread is not easy to find. I don't eat bread all the time but when I do I prefer to have...
Read moreThis place is beautiful! Such a nice cozy looking spot. Due to current pandemic situation and in the interest of keeping everyone safe, healthy and fed; online ordering is paramount. The little parking area is very convenient. On the day I placed my order it was a very last minute decision, after work, wanting great bread to go with our dinner. Placed our order online as we were driving there. Parked in the parking lot to wait for our pick-up time. An employee came near our vehicle to see if we needed help. We said our online order wasn't until about 20 minutes from now, he asked for the order name and said okay. A few short minutes later he was back with our order. I was tremendously impressed with the mindfulness of the staff and their social distancing practices. Always wearing masks and keeping their distance while serving their customers with a positive helpful attitude. Supporting local is important and we'll definitely be supporting this establishment...
