El Mesquite — Restaurant in Houston

I visited this establishment on a Sunday, but regrettably, the service fell short of expectations. Upon arrival for breakfast, we were not provided with menus. After seating myself and my family, it took ten minutes for staff to attend to us—whether to take drink orders or even acknowledge our presence. The service appeared disorganized; having worked in the restaurant industry, I'm familiar with standard service time targets, which this restaurant seemed to lack in every aspect, from timing to basic maintenance. Several tables around us were noticeably unclean, and the kitchen area appeared untidy. I was particularly concerned to see what looked like cartons of eggs left unrefrigerated. Our drinks arrived warm with only a minimal amount of ice, which did little to cool them. To make matters worse, the neighboring table received their meals before ours, despite us having ordered first. The indoor temperature was uncomfortably high, further detracting from the experience. This restaurant is one of those off the beaten path of gems. A pleasant surprise and a memorable experience. I am from Canada and found this place on Google maps by luck.

I am not familiar with authentic Mexican cuisine. The owner was kind enough to explain the dishes being served and offered to customize my dish at no extra charge. The restaurant is in an older building, but the staff keeps the place clean, the food is fresh with a great flavor, not overpowering or too hot. I also tried the hot sauce, I enjoyed the flavor, but only a few drops is what I could handle. The owner and staff understand customer service and quality of a product being served. I will be visiting again soon.

I noticed this place while passing by one day and was curious to try it. My husband and I finally got around to going, and we were pleasantly surprised. We didn’t have any expectations, but the experience was wonderful.

The food was excellent—especially the chips and salsa. I had the fajita taco pasta, a taco, and a brisket taco, and everything was delicious, right down to the tortillas. The atmosphere felt very homey, and you could tell they put effort into creating it. We especially enjoyed the live classical guitar music. The only downside was the commercials playing in between, which disrupted the vibe a bit.
