Out with friends in the Heights, they strongly suggested that we go to Hughies for dinner. When we arrived around 6ish on a Saturday evening the place was busy but not packed. Our friends grabbed a table (I'm guessing it's seat yourself). The staff was on point, quickly placing water and taking our drink order. The waitress stopped by to let us know the kitchen was backed up so things might take a bit longer than normal. That was nice to know ahead of time. Once our order was taken, she stopped by from time to time checking on us while waiting on our food (through the wait she was on point at all times). At last our food was delivered. Sadly not all of our party was served, but Hughies again was on point, making the issue right. Also, our waitress came before the meal was delivered and said a couple of condiment items had run out, offering suggestions as replacements. So at this point, you're wondering why the 3 stars. The reason for the 3 points came from the food, while very good, the portions were small. Several of the people in our party had previously been to Hughies and each complained that this was smaller than even the lunch portions. Several had ordered the shakened beef, and all commented that it was missing ingredients, such as the cloves of garlic. My meal was tasty, but left me wanting more. So it's clear, the wait staff was great, the food was very good (even if missing ingredients), but the portions were small. Will I go back, yes, just to give them another shot. Sometimes it just might not be the...
Read moreHave been coming here off and on for years and the service has always been great. The food is always out on time and in good order no matter if there is a packed house or not. Yesterday though was the exception due to the fact two servers could not keep their hands off the manager. They both consistently talked to him all night including when the food runner light was on. The manager was so preoccupied with talking to the two servers he didn't even tell them to run the food sitting in the window. So as a result my food came out warm and the garnishments was wilted telling me that it had sat in the window. This has never happened at Hughie's in the years that I have come here. The only saving grace was the bartender and the guy server who served us. He was busy most of the time picking up the slack from the two women servers. I've never seen this behavior with any of the other managers and hope this isn't a trend that will continue. I'm only writing this review to bring attention to this foul up in service. They were not even busy, and maybe I am a little bit spoiled from the amazing service they have always offered me when I come here but I would hate to have the standards they set fall because of one manager and two servers who couldn't stop flirting on shift. I realized that two years ago I left a 5 star review and I stand by it still!! This...
Read moreTo fully appreciate this unique "tavern and grill," you must be a beer drinker, which neither my husband and I are. We are "beer readers" though, and while waiting for our orders, we read about the many unique brewers posted on Hughies' illuminated billboard menu. There is a beer for every taste here and a good selection of affordable wine by the bottle or glass which is what I prefer.Thursdays are half price days after 3pm on their well priced bottles of wine.
The cuisine is amazing It is unlike any Vietnamese food I have ever had. Every dish is tempting from the Shaking Chicken or Beef to their shrimp or salmon I usually have the grilled salmon, and it is always very fresh. It tastes perfect with the kale salad with their exquisite raspberry vinaigrette and dried cranberries . It is the best salad. My husband bounces around the menu, but often gets the banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich). Whatever we get, we ask for Hughies' variety of sauces: peanut, dumpling, sweet & sour and fish sauce They add to the savory flavor of our food. The ambiance is cozy and the service is always very helpful and professional. We have enjoyed both the 18th Street and Main...
