Stopped in the Donut Palace where "Customer is King" for early morning donuts and coffee as I was making my way across East Texas.
The coffee was hot, black, and rich. The flavor and fragrance of the donuts was distinctive, well-balanced - sweet but not cloying - and appealingly demanded a second bite. The raised donut offered a whiff of yeastiness and delivered on its promise of authentic, old-fashioned goodness.
Donut-lovers of a certain age, like myself, who grew up on pre-industrial donut recipes executed by their grandma's remember and appreciate true old-fashioned flavors. The flavor combinations here made sense to me. I'm all for new concepts but just because you can throw things together doesn't mean you should, as so many donut shops do.
